Fanfiction.net's latest idea of annoying ads...
Fanfiction.net's latest idea of annoying ads...

Has anyone else who visits fanfiction.net been getting a "please answer our sponsor's quiz or we won't let you go any further" style ads?
It got to the point where I had to enable their adblocker to get rid of them...and that's good for a day only.

I've been getting them.

You didn't mention the browser your using, but Firefox with no scripts and Java turned off seems to help. That does cripple the main website, but sometimes it's the only way to go to the web site.

I usually allow most of fanfiction.net's ads to run unless they go far overboard like the latest round, after all those ads are what pays for the handling of the fanfics.

I've actually seen worse "attack ads at so called reputable websites like news websites.

Ads that literally take the web page hostage.

Ads that slide around staying in the exact center, corner, top or bottom of the page.

I've also seen ads that flare up and expand their boundaries or dash across the webpage at random intervals

Time delayed adds that suddenly explode filling more than half the screen after you've had several seconds to start reading.

I don't believe I've ever seen fanfiction.net host those type of ads, I guess free fanfiction isn't worth the programming effort.

Nope. I've never even encountered an ad like that anywhere either - aside from the usual you must join to view content ones. Hopefully it's just an ip range/ISP specific ad.

I saw just one of those, yesterday, and was indeed higly annoyed. None today, with maybe a hundred page views and counting as I harvest ID numbers to plug into the DeFFNetizer to save off the next while's offline reading when I go back to nearly-no-access tomorrow, so maybe it was a test shot and they got massive enough negative response to shut it off? Here's hoping.

Nope. I use Adblock too, I just try and turn it off for sites I regularly visit. As Hmelton said, it's what pays for the hosting

Haven't seen any of these, and I've been using DeFFNetizer to slurp down fics to put in my Kindle (via calibre -- the two play very nicely together, I discovered last night). I use Seamonkey, the open source equivalent of the old Netscape suite built around Firefox and Thunderbird etc., and I have Noscript installed (but not Adblock).

Oddly, I see no ads on ffn. Do they not want money from my presence?

(While I do allow their javascript to work, I feel that any ad that won't work without javascript shouldn't exist.)

Whether you have adblocking software on your computer or not, you can easily block all ads on FF.net by going to the "help" section (upper right hand corner) and selecting the site's ad blocking service. It only lasts for one day, but hides all ads for that time. Just renew it every time you visit, and you'll never see an ad there at all.

Adblock plus and noscript on firefox take care of the ad issues for me. To tell the truth letting any third party adsite run script on your browser is asking for trouble they aren't that good at vetting their ads for malware or spyware.

I've had to clean out my sisters laptop twice of a malware package that fakes being an antivirus which starts throwing up fake virus infection warnings and intercepts all attempts to use a browser asking you to register and pay with credit card.
