Now that you've got everything, I just noticed... you don't have a card reader in your hardware list. (Very handy thing, a card reader - it lets you get data to and from your smartphone or camera without cables.) Is there one built into the case, perhaps?

My phone is fairly stupid, although connecting it is a pain as I have to use the software supplied with it, and I think I've got a cable for my camera (just checked - found it). I don't think I'll benefit noticably from a card reader. I've also not included some speakers - my current ones are already a high end 2.1 set and they'll do fine.
I've got the power supply and drives insered into the case and have stopped for supper.

You can always pick up a USB card reader if you really need one. They're cheap.

Stopped for supper again. Building computers while stressed out and hungry is not a good idea.
Got the processor in the motherboard and the board inside the case.
I had to loosen a screw that held the clip over the processor socket down to get the processor in. I only hope that a) the processor is in properly and b) I didn't damage anything pushing it down earlier before I did that. The fact that the fan seems to be fitting well is reassuring, I suppose.
Connecting the front panel is fiddly and not clearly labelled.
Next step will be memory, graphics card and sata cables.

I think I have run into one motherboard, ever, that had the front panel connectors clearly labeled. The rest have ranged from mostly adequate to "labels? we don't need no stink'n labels."

My Asus MOBO was SUPPOSED to have a plastic widget that took all the front panel connectors into one plug, it didn't, so yeah, I know all about the fiddly bits to get the front switches working.

It's quiet, I can get into BIOS and the processor isn't overheating.
However, i can't get the CD Rom to work. The light comes on and it's detected by th Bios.
But I have to use a bent paperclip in the hole to get it open and it doesn't appear to respond to much and doesn't dtect a CD inside.
I suspect that the bios thinks it's a hard drive, even though the label is CD/DVD in the list of drives.
[or I could easily be over complicating - and it's just a duff DVD drive)
Any suggestions?

It sounds like you've got a pinch booting from CD?

BIOS's are all different so I can't give you a clear step-by-step, but he basic order of things should go something like this: Turn on, get to BIOS set up. Look for Boot Order. Set your CD/DvD (may be 'optical drive') at the top of the list. Save and shut down. Get the CD in there, however you want (turn it on and open, put it in before you shut down, pry it open with a hacksaw and pair of pliers.... (don't do that)) Once you have the CD in there, boot up and you should get some things happening.

If it doesn't work: Check to see if the CD is bootable from another computer with, presumably, a working CD Drive. If the CD is good, then it's something with the computer. If you don't have any OS installed yet, boot order is superfluous, and it should boot from the CD when it finds no OS anywhere else. If, at this point, you still don't have results, it's time to start checking cables and power cords and whatnot.

The BIOS is a good place to start, it should be pretty obvious how to set boot order.
Also, is it a SATA CD drive?  If so, put it on a different cable than your hard drive.  Sometimes the two don't play well together.

you mean PATA, or you mean 'if not'.

SATA is 1-1-1 for cables and ports and devices, where PATA is 1-1-2.

(one cable, one port, one device, vs one cable one port two devices)

Yep Sata is 1 to 1. My motherboard doesn't even have any pata connectors.
The Optical drive isn't non-functional in terms of reading that disc - it's non function in terms of doesn't open when you use the eject button. The little light on the front comes on, though, which seems to indicate that it does have power. It's also detected by my bios - which does indicate that it isn't a loose cable.
IIRC, this is the part of the computer which turned up first - and the package got shoved through my letter box and fell to the floot with the outer wrapping half off. It may have got damaged in transit.

Er, yeah, PATA.  I knew what I meant.
And yeah, sounds like the postman played football with it.

My replacement drive arrived and it turns out that it was a duff optical drive and not whatever complicated theory I'd dreampt up. I'm installing windows now.

Win 7 is a surprisingly better installer than xp. Which is not to say it's fast, but it's miles ahead of xp.

I really need to work out what the h*ll they did to my perfectly good task bar and start menu.

Right-click on the taskbar, select Properties, and change the "Taskbar Buttons" option to 'Never combine'.  That'll put you back to the older style buttons for whatever tasks you open, which is at least a start.

I found that and it got rid of some of the problem. I also can't get more than a substitute for the classic start menu (the menu for people who aren't too lazy or stupid to properly organise their system). There are downloadable third party versions - but I don't trust them or want to make windows any more unstable and clunky. The pictures screensaver cannot be adjusted at all.
Oh - and saving data to DVDs is NOT a good idea. They don't last.

Why?  because Frys has a brick and mortar location near where I live now, I have the skillz, and I am despareatly dissatisfied with the Gateway and dell websites.  NewEgg does not have a B&M location near me (heck, fairly sure that like Amazon the only B&M location is their central warehouse!)
Secondary consideration:  Future upgrade compatibilty, I want to be able to replace/upgrade components to keep this system at least serviceable as the state of the art evolves past it. for as long as possible.
Which, btw, is why there's a monitor in there as well.  Granted its not HUGE, but at the moment I'm running a VERY old E-machines 14" vga that cant handle more than 1024x760
Comments, thoughts, suggestions on stuff i've totally overlooked and will come back to bite me in the near future?
