Say hello to the newest member of the landed gentry.
06-01-2011, 11:05 PM
It's begun.
After three months of searching, two weeks of checking possibilities, another week of negotiations, two weeks of waiting on paperwork, half an hour of lawyering, and a mortgage equal to three years' salary, I am now the proud owner of a 1250 square foot condo in lovely Rochester, NY.

Congratulations, but I do hope you know what the winters are like over there?
After staying there for a year my father, a native to Washington State that grew up in the foothills of the Cascades, said that the novelty of snow has worn off from him. :p
Very nice! congrats!

Way to go - easily one of the most stressful things you will do - first time homebuying.

And the condo has the advantage of an attached garage, and an HOA that pays for daily snowplowing.

I hope you don't live near the lake...
I did, and we got on average a foot more of snow then everyone else each snow fall. After a lot of snow shoveling there, I was one of the strongest seventh/sixth graders in the school, the couch didn't like the fact that I didn't like to play competitive sports because I was not a social butter fly. Damn, a lot of the kids there were lazy though, they paid the complex manager's snow plow guy to clear their drive ways out instead of good old fashion hard work. I know I made the right choice, and made plenty of cash snow shoveling.

Amusingly, I'm actually moving -away- from the lake, by about ten miles. My current apartment is only about a mile from the coast, the new place is well on the south side of the city.

good for you! The further away you are from the lake the better.
However, this could mean that your car will be more affected by salt in the winter due to more highway travel, depending on where you are in the city.
I can't remember if the south side is taken care of faster after a snowfall then the north or not....

Not going to be so much of a problem, as I won't be doing anywhere near as /much/ highway driving. My work is on the south side of the city. (My daily commute is being cut by about 60%.)

Congratulations. I bought my house almost a year ago and I'm still getting used to the feeling.
This generally involves a lot of worrying about the electrics and curtains and the garden.
