External Subtitles anyone used them?

Ayep, my rfc/help issues's related to the topic title for I was just crazy enough to acquire the R2 DVD of 'Macross F - Itsuwari no Utahime' thinking that I should be able to pick up a English subtitle pack for it, later. The fact that VLC and a few other players say that they support such a thing, reinforced that thought. However actually that thought is falling apart with the discovery that no-one has released to the wild the English fansub script file. It exists, otherwise there'd be no point for all the rips that are out there.
I've spotted a spanish sub pack which could be a good way to test the concept and supposedly a group on 4chan has produced an english sub.
Feh, if all else fails I'd just watch it for the visuals just like the other Macross F disk I picked up.
Addendum: I somehow managed to track down some English subtitles files, just leaving me with one problem how to feed them into the live DVD video stream. As previously mentioned VLC supposedly can do it, but won't do so for me. Then there was the playback issues....ouch. No joy with VLC in either sata optical drive, the ide drives were the only ones producing a output but the interlacing & pixelisation was up the creek. I can just imagine the fun I'd have with the blu-ray version.
Still, even with no English subs activated I still had some clue what was going on. Heh VB-6 Koenig Monster & Daedalus Attack ftw!

I wish to point out that the subtitle file needs to be the same name as the show that you are interested in watching. (you may have to change it) (IMPORTANT: make sure that the file ends with '.srt' for it to work.)

Which would be fine if it was in a computer friendly avi-esc format, but no I'm trying to do this on-the-fly to the video output from a pre-recorded DVD aka a RAW source as acquired from http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BBBA-8658]here. The subtitle files I've got end in '.ass' and show up fine in Subtitle Workshop.

You should be able to specify any subtitle-type file manually in the VLC "Open file" dialogue, IIRC - I'll fire my copy up and look again. Ah, okay.
Media>Advanced Open File, you get a big dialogue with File, Disc, Network and Capture Device tabs. If you can't pick the .vob off the dic using the Add button on the file list so the subtitles file can go in the so-named section under that after checking the "use a subtitles file" checkbox, try checking "show more options" down at the bottom and put the subs file in where it asks for a Media Rescourse Locator for something to play simulataneously. This is in VLC 1.1.5, but it's not much different from older versions and shouldn't be much different in newer versions. Granted, I've only done it myself once and quite a while ago, but I don't rmemeber it being excessively difficult once I found the right switches and knobs so to speak.

I tried those options in VLC when I found them yet it either didn't take or do anything, as no subtitles turned up. Nor did any indication that it worked too.

Dang. DOn't know how to help you, then, though if you own a physical copy there's not as much moral objection to downloading an out-and-out fansub. It isn't likely to make lawyers any happier, but ... yeah.

I know there's fansubs of it out there and my DVD copy's actually the second physical format I've got this movie in - the first is UMD, the PSP format. Yes, I bought the Macross Frontier video game without being able to read a lick of Japanese (crazy no? I've also got Sakura Taisen for the PSP too). Storage space & bandwidth constraints are some of the reasons why I didn't grab one of the torrent's.
I'll probably nut out a way to get the English subs happening, might not be pretty and I'd probably need advice elseforum and grumble at Harmony Gold all through out the process.

What can I say, I like the games, and the HUDs are mostly in English... MTF Dating Sim Mode is made of loathing, though. If you want to set one of your unused alt color schemes to be me to blow away in freeplay mode or for a wingman, Green Bananas Squadron's main colors are based on the top row yellow preset, one or two clicks greener, and at half saturation, with magenta optics in whichever combination looks better, while Red Wreckers is one or two clicks from the left end of the color bar with full saturation and brightness with trim one or two clicks left from the yellow preset and green optics. Grape Nuts is the second-row purple one from the right, at full saturation and with the brightness up a tad, with trim five clicks right from yellow, orange optics, and any third color (not optics) set to nearly-black dark grey. Yes, they are all very bright and eyecatching, that's because a black plane is hard to fly 3rd person in a space mission, and it makes it easy to see which "allied army" is your wingman to try to get close enough to use the "heal yourself and nearby allies" command skills. My favorite mecha are the VF-14/Fz-109/AZ-130 family, VF-5000T/G (which makes a great Grape Nuts Squadron plane with the black on the legs) VF-25G, VF-2SS, and VF-4.
I'm annoyed at how weak they made the Metal Siren from Macross II, and Silvie Gina's stats, though - the MS is supposed to be the VF-2SS's replacement, but the 2SS SAP is the second strongest plane in the game right behind the VF-25S with Tornado Pack while the MS is a middle-tier unit, and only barely there when you consider that most of the other craft have some kind of Pack to basically double their HP while the MS has the weapons and boosters built in, but no compensation for the lack of added armor. For a new top-shelf fighter from thirty years in an alternate future that' kind of disappointing, and doesn't make sense when it's supposed to exceed the 2SS in every respect, which it only barely does even without considering the Super Armor Pack. Likewise, Silvie Gina, top ace of the Solar System with only the possible exception of Nexx, should at least be in the same league as Roy Fokker or Max, not putzing around at Kakizaki's level.
As for the Gundam games, I haven't actually played them since I'm still working my way through the Macross side, but they were sold in a batch and use the same combat engine, so why not? At least a few Gundams don't suck, though from quick glances at the FAQs these may well not include the Airmaster or Ashtaron from X, which are really the only ones I actually like much, and if the Taurus from Wing is in there it's not likely to be more than a lame Enemy Mission unit. And of course, none of them have a GERWALK-like mode, which is what I spend most of my non-melee time in with the Macross games.

If you're using Windows, have you tried Media Player Classic: http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ to do this?

MPC throws up a copy-protect & a wrong zone each time I've tried it. VLC is the only one producing playback with regularity, just as mentioned with no soft-subs.
Addendum: I finally got MPC to play the DVD as I'm getting the Sheryl Nome voiced version of a FBI-warning followed soon afterwards by a black screen with Alto talking then a whole stack of unwatchable mess, but in that mess a subtitle has been spotted!
I should try to play Macross Triangle Frontier more but I'm finding it difficult. I did however work out how to get a bot-filled DM to happen, but I've been playing (button-mashing)Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 more.

the japanese-language wiki, as piped through Google Translation. Quality is predictably spotty, but between the two I've managed to get it going well enough. I still hate dating sim mode, though, and eventually just got TempAR working on my PSP and used a cheat to get a maxed custom pilot and copilot, since you can't raise stats or learn skills anymore in normal play like you could in the earlier games.
Datig sim mode is good for one thing, thoguh: getting Nyan-Nyan points. Something like 50-70 thousand per playthrough of the story, which goes nicely to open or upgrade your units, and depending on whether you pick the SMS or NUNS to join your starter mecha with have well beyond its maximum useable tune points when you finish and check it out in Campaign Mode.

try dowloading mplayer, it should be able to handle the subtitles.

mplayer seem's to have done the trick, now it's just a matter of getting the subtitles to sync. Edit: Adding a delay of about 1100ms has fixed the sync issue, now it's just a matter of the odd characters in the subtitles.
As for the game, well I haven't seen either of those guides before. Kinda like I still have yet to see a complete one for Sakura Taisen 2.

Frack! Similar thing again, different R2 DVD movie: Macross Frontier: sayonara no tsubasa. SMPlayer will play it fine for about an hour, then it looses the plot reseting the time count to 00:00:00 while continuing to play. Bloody annoying! Still getting the same issues as what happened before with new copy-protection winkles killing playback in VLC, MPC......darn near everything else I've tried won't work. I probably should've just stuck to the fansubs.
Damn you Harmony Gold for blocking something new that would've put some more money in your coffers, but no my money went straight into Bandai's instead!
I think I'd have more trouble with the blu-ray.
