FTL Neutrinos? http://io9.com/5843112/faster-than-ligh ... ot-so-fast]This guy gives a reason why he's skeptical, beyond "It cannot be done!"

On the flip side, this report indicates that FTL neutrinos have been detected in at least two separate experiments.

All the reasoning in the world, no matter how well-thought-out, takes a back seat to actual evidence.

Absolutely, I'm just trying to avoid breaking into spontaneous dances and paroxyms of joy at the cracks in the lightspeed wall until they're proven to be more than spiderwebs clinging to it.

Everybody is skeptical of the results, including the scientists who got the result. So what they are doing is giving out their data and methodology and asking the scientific community to help them find out there it all went wrong.

Afterall "huh thats weird" is a valid result and must be evaluated, that's the only way we'll find new things.

Do note that they went to quite big lengths to verify their data, and with everything they tried they have not been able to find out why it's wrong.

I've read that most scientific breakthroughs come from a "That's odd..." moment. That does not imply that a given such moment is likely to lead to a breakthrough. P(A|B) = P(A)P(B|A)/P(B).

Well, after the bruhaha that went on with cold fusion, that's understandable.

There's an NPR program on this topic, right now, if anyone wants to tune in. It's the lameass "On Point" call-in show, though, so I wound't be listening if I had a choice, and most of it is just Joe Random calling in talking about time travel and telegrams to the rad sensors on the Manhattan Project about (event x) etc. Annoying bastards.

Yup a little disappointing that it is just experimental error. Some forums have been railing against the scientists, but they did the right thing.

If you get a weird result double check and tipple check everything and do it again. If the weirdness persists then ask for help.

"Tipple check" - does that mean you come back when you're sober and see if it still makes sense? Big Grin
