Vehicular Unpleasantness
05-07-2013, 03:48 AM
Well, I was on my way to the local game store after work, planning to reserve a few NIS PS3 games, when the guy in front of me stopped suddenly. Naturally, I did the same.
The kid behind me, driving his mom's car, was a bit too busy looking at some bikes in a parking lot.
Upside is, I'm not hurt! Downside is, my rear bumper is cosmetically scuffed up (and internally ruined, from absorbing a 20-30mph collision), and I now have a hole in the shape of a trailer hitch in my front bumper... and my radiator. Car is being towed, family is scooting me around, and insurance is being pushed to cough up money. So far, I have every hope that I'll come out of this financially unscathed. I have a claim number, and go into the collision specialists tomorrow to get them on the case/rental transportation arranged.

Did you have yourself checked for whiplash? Someone rammed me from behind at 60 mph while I was standing still. I pin balled into the car in front of me and I wrecked the rear panel. And did a cop determine who was to blame? It helps with the insurance.

No cop, but the guy owned up to it. Also, not checked for whiplash. It's been ~3 hours, and I've not noticed any problems yet.
Like I said, still not done with the paperwork.

Had a very similar accident once. The guy behind tried to weasel out (to the point of coming up with a lying "witness"), but considering that it was the rear end of my car that was the worst off and I had taken photographs of the scene with my mobile, it didn't work.
Apart from the agrivation and delay, the problem was that they decided that my car would cost more to repair than it was worth, so the insurance only paid out the trade in value of my car. Which was considerably less than the cost of a replacement. And I had the FUN of going car shopping, when I didn't have a vehicle to get to a car shop.

Like I said, still not done with the paperwork. You might not feel anything wrong for a day or two... Better to get yourself checked out.

Well, it's been a week. I'm still okay, but the car was deemed totaled after a day or three. Only worth $9-10K, but the repair bill apparently started at $5K, and started going up from there.
They're giving me a ~$11K check tomorrow afternoon, after some parchmentwork at the local State Farm office. I'm taking the whole day off, because we found a potential replacement car already- a 2009 Ford Focus with all the options, for just about $10K. For reference, I paid almost $10K for my old car (2007 Focus with no options) a year and a half ago, so this looks like quite the deal.
If it all works out, I'll have a replacement steed, newer and better than the old one, for a few hundred bucks. Won't even need to get a loan!
As for transport, I have family here, and we have a number of cars... that, and State Farm paid for a rental... well, they *say* it's a car. It's a Fiat 500- small, fairly comfy, but not the most pious devotee of Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration you'll ever meet. Once it gets up to speed, it's good, but I feel like it'd get there faster if I got out and pushed.
