Great Northeastern Snow Storm

The Boston area has gotten more actual snowfall, as far as I know, but at least some of it melts between the weekly snowstorms...
Hmmm.  Now I'm in Ypsilanti, which means I could literally walk to downtown Ann Arbor within two hours (allowing some extra time to cross streets and the highway without getting run over), and it doesn't seem to me it's been quite that bad.  Looking out my front window, the main drag appears clear and dry ... what I can see of it, beyond the plowed snow heaped up three and four feet high....  But we've had at least a couple of days in the last week that I believe the temperatures got above freezing for several hours at a time.
I think it was a week or two ago that he told me that, so I think it might be some combination of my info being out of date, him exaggerating for effect, and the university being REALLY bad at plowing its parking lots.

Discovered I had a flat tire this afternoon.

Drove - slowly - to the gas station two blocks down the road, and put air in the tire. Air came out of the tire as fast as it went in. Found the hole - too big to patch.

Discovered that, as good as the Mazda 3 is in other respects, the emergency gear sucks. The tire iron isn't even the right size for the lug nuts. Luckily, gas station is beside a taxi stand, a taxi driver had the right size tire iron, and he helped me swap the tire with the emergency spare.

Tipped taxi driver for the help. Drove home the slow way, with the flat and the sucky emergency gear in trunk. (Must remember to find and buy a decent jack and decent tire iron.)

Tire stores are closed - will have to get a new set Friday.

Checks forecast.

Forecast for Friday is snow followed by 15mm of freezing rain. Emergency spare is not rated for freezing rain. Might have risked it anyway, but not with that much ice from the sky.

Forecast for Saturday is no freezing rain. Hope roads are salted and at least center-bare by then. Hope closest tire store has a set in my size. (Will call ahead to make sure - the one thing in this mess that I can control.)

I feel for you, Rob, I really do. Our car is in the shop right at this very moment -- the windshield wiper transmission gave up the ghost on Sunday. Had to drive in the rain on Wednesday with no wipers at all. We'll be out another US$700 by the end of the day.

Weather cleared enough to take the car in this afternoon. CDN$750 after taxes, but the place I bought them from offers free tire rotation every 10,000km.

Sunday night's storm was kind of strange here in NJ. We had a literal dusting yesterday morning, and my workplace, 15 miles north of me, had nothing -- but my mom, 35 miles south of me, had about 4 inches.

We're still in a deep freeze, though. As I type this, it's 6 degrees F outside.

If it's any consolation, as I type this it's -1 F outside in Ottawa.

Forecast says we might get to freezing on Friday. Maybe.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands the weather has remained largely unchanged for the last few months, with autumn apparently deciding to skip winter and go straight for spring.

I don't envy you guys at all.

I guess that means you ate Sir Robin's minstrels last winter, then?

I think we take the cake for most ridiculous yo-yoing in the temperature. We were getting highs in the 80's just a couple of days ago. Now we're getting overnight freeze warnings again. :p
EDIT: I think it;s safe to say that this is one of the few places in the world that while you can keep your summer wardrobe in service pretty much year round, it's best to keep a winter wardrobe in a roll-away in case things get wacky the way they've been this year.

I believe that is what John Travolta called Idina Menzel when she won the Oscar. Because he couldn't be bothered to find out how to pronounce her name before going on stage. Because he's a tool.

No, simply because he got tongue-tied. It happens to the best of us. And he was apparently all but pounding his head on a wall out of embarassment backstage while she was singing.

It never came here.

And somehow, even though it's early-ish March still we hit 20 degrees or so Centigrade. There's something severely wrong with the weather here and it has been since atleast December.

Possible snow forecast for the NY/NJ area on Wednesday, so a tentative "no" here, too, Ordnance.

We're getting 50+ in the day here in West Virginia. All the snow is melting, and the ground is super-saturated. I'm glad mosquitos aren't a problem in this part of the country; if we had this kind of standing water in Texas, the number of West Nile virus cases would likely skyrocket.

Oh, it's been high-40s to mid-50s here the last couple days, too -- and today and tomorrow as well. It's just that winter is getting a few last blows in. Dammit.
