"... but the bottom line is that a normal swimmer on the Moon could probably launch themselves a full meter out of the water, and Michael Phelps may well be able to manage 2 or 3." IMAGE: "Oh, hi there!"

With a close second to:
"Swimmers wearing fins can go substantially faster than regular swimmers without them (although the fastest swimmer wearing flippers will still lose to a runner, even if the runner is also wearing flippers and jumping over hurdles)."

He definitely had fun with that one.

Also: would love to go swimming on the Moon. Or Mars for that matter.

Well, no, not if you actually want to bowl.  I have to admit I just had to see the context for this, and I was almost disappointed that it was in the first illustration.
The Google Books search made up for any near-disappointment, though.  As did the 2-hour movie.
Edit:  Oh, and to save anyone else the trouble, 5227 Santa Monica Blvd in LA is an empty lot next to an elementary school.  The question we should ask is, "why?"

Apparently, it belongs to Hollywood Lanes.

Though it has little or nothing to do with the article, I feel obliged to say, "Oh my God! That bowling ball ... that's my wife!"

My God, it's full of stairs.

No, wait - that's not actually in the page.

Ah, here we go:

A stairway to space If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, well, uh, boy, I don't know what to tell you. I guess ask it to leave? ...

I don't know why but that one made me laugh more than any other recent installment. And...

'The obvious question, then, is "why doesn't my phone run on propane?" The obvious answer is "because your phone would catch fire," but that's not quite it. See, lithium-ion batteries are also extremely flammable, and a huge amount of effort has gone into making Michael Bay scenarios less common.'

With a close second to: "Now you have two problems, and both the original problem and the new problem are on fire."

There are plenty of good lines this week...

"Specifically, according to one of my favorite charts, a black hole moon would be a grain of fine to medium-fine sand, and could pass through a sieve of size ASTM No. 70 or larger. I mean, I guess a black hole with the mass of the Moon would pass right through any sieve, destroying it in the process, but that's neither here nor there."

(There are better lines, but they're spoilers.)

That favorite chart is pretty damned cool, btw. I just saved a local copy for myself.

And I was waiting for that YouTube link from the moment I saw the column title.

The nuclear reactor on an aircraft carrier, for example, produces less than 200 megawatts. To melt snow in front of your car, you'd need three of those.

I suppose that's a reflection of the quality of the questions... so we'll have to come up with some better questions, then ask them.
