Checking in - I'm okay, but not allowed out of the building (presumably until after they catch the remaining terrorists).

Glad to hear it. Caught word of this and wondered about our Canadian contingent.

I hope they don't need to keep you locked down for too long.

Thanks. As for the lockdown, I'd rather spend the night here than get shot...

EDIT: In my opinion, the Sergeant-at-Arms deserves a medal of some sort for taking out the gunman who got into the Center Block (our equivalent of the USA's Capitol Building or the UK's Westminster) just before he could reach the caucus chambers where our elected officials were meeting.

Sadly, the CF reservist on guard at the War Memorial died in the hospital. They're still searching the downtown core. This worries me the most. The more hours go by, the harder it'll be to find this guy. I hope they catch him/her soon.

When I heard the news, I was worried; glad to hear you're okay. What's the status on the lockdown?

Just lifted a few minutes ago, except in the downtown core.

EDIT: And I am now home - after a trip that usually takes less than a half hour.

Maybe this is just release of stress, but I find this to be very funny:

The presenter on the radio show I'm listening to at the moment mentioned that police on the scene weren't telling people "move back;" they were asking people "please move back." Only in Canada is the anti-terrorist response polite.

The reports state there is possibly another gun man loose. The guy who shot the soldier at the memorial. Because the shooting at parliament started 2 minutes after that incident. Not enough time for a single person to be at the memorial and then be at parliament.

I've made that trip on foot many times in less than seven minutes, and I'm out of shape and have never been particularly fast. The reports also say he traveled by car. (Carjacked or aided-and-abeted, we don't know.)

Oh - the downtown core is still in lockdown. I hope people have access to cafeterias or food courts.

There's a dashcam video floating around which shows a man around the time of the shooting getting into a car with no license plates at the War Memorial, carrying a long, thin object. If that was the gunman, then he could have made it to Parliament in the time period. The WM is just down the street from Parliament.

What we know the next morning:
  • Lockdown ended ~8:30pm.
  • This appears to be the work of one person; the car was one he drove up in and left running at the War Memorial.
  • Gunman had a Lybian family name, and was "known to police."
  • Parliament Hill is closed to the public today - it's a crime scene - but the business of government is going on - including today's legislative session.

What we still don't know:
  • Did he have any connections to terrorist organizations?

When I first saw reports on CNN.com at about 12:30-1:00pm yesterday, they were saying "multiple shooters", but by the time I actually read the articles the latest updates said "two shooters". And this morning CBS Radio News is saying one shooter. I find it unlikely the official response would blow off a second shooter on the loose, so it seems like Ian's link and supposition are on target.

The anti-terrorist forces in the US should take lessons, but it's far too important to be a macho badass around here -- if you're not treating the citizens as the enemy, you're not doing your job.
