New Horizons
New Horizons
#1
So, the NASA spacecraft New Horizons is set to visit Pluto in well... 28 hours.  I'm excited.  After all, we're already getting science from pictures like this:

Actually, it's browner than that, more of a tan color, but the color instrument isn't included in that photo.  It'll be a super-fast flyby, but we'll be getting data for months.  Anyway, I'm just looking forward to learning about everyone's favorite trans-Neptunian object.

Doesn't it kinda look like some tentacled horror is reaching up from the bottom of the planet in that pic?

BTW - what's the original source for that particular image? I'm wondering if the notations were added by a member of the New Horizons team or by some amateur who's a fan of stuff we like. (Hoping it was actually one of the New Horizons tech/science crew proper - "One of us! One of us! One of us!")

The original source for that pic is NASA + me.  The joke bits are all me, sadly.  I just copied the label style from NASA, which were 23pt Arial Narrow Bold (narrow and bold, what?).
Here's a new pic for you to make up for it:[Image: nh-color-pluto-charon.jpg]

That's Charon on the left, Pluto on the right.

It seems the mission hit a speed bump on July 4, but all is well. Story here.

Did you update the illustration and the entry on the FenWiki yet, or do you want to wait until the big batch of images starts coming in tomorrow? EDIT: Sorry, http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-la ... pluto.html]not tomorrow - next year.

They found out that the original pictures was a holographic field. This is what Pluto looks like.
