New Fic Recommendations vs. MechaGodzilla II

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4569093/1/ ... Done-Right

Harry's entire class at Hogwarts decides to go back in time and do it right.

And when we say "do it right", we mean Marauders style.

And when we say "entire class", we do mean all of them.

HP/Nanoha crossover by Lupine Horror

Due to various and sundry shenanigans, Harry gets linked to Reinforce (the original) who teaches him Midchildan magic. The two of them go to Hogwarts. Plot happens.
Just started reading this, and reached a bit where, at Gringotts, Harry finds out that his parents are secretly alive, and are living in hiding with Harry's two siblings, while Harry was left with the Dursleys.  This is a giant red flag for me, and I'd like some details on this before I continue reading.

Didn't think I'd like this one as it's a really weird choice for main characters - but it's quite good and a GenFic. The Summary:

In order to cement a truce between the two villages, Konoha and Iwa exchange recently graduated academy students. Fortunately, if anything were to go wrong, Haruno Sakura was just average enough to risk losing. AU.

So far, the author has not chosen to reveal details beyond the fact that they're alive. We still have no answers as to their motivation and Harry seems disinclined to press the issue. It has not been a plot point at all, so far, beyond the simple background of "they're alive, and Harry's cut off from his trust fund because shenanigans".

On Reinforced-Magic: I read the first two chapters, found the dialog and characters to be flat and wooden, and it could have used a lot more "show, don't tell". It might be an interesting idea, but it doesn't seem to be my cup of tea.

It was rather stiffly written, I agree.

it's also going past super-harry and into godlike-harry, and he's only 12 so far... i powered through the first one, but petered out about 10 chapters into the second.

That... is Saturday Night Live Style.  Funny as all hell, yes, but there's far too much crack and not enough plot.  It's fine if you like that sort of thing, but it's not my cup of tea.  (I myself was hoping for something like a really good Indiana Jones movie thoroughly spiked with humor.)
Next rec, please.

Agreed -- "Marauders Style" would have been the class looking like any other group of Firsties -- while Stuff happens all around them with no real explanation.  This was... way over the top; I actually felt like the Colonel from Monty Python wanting to butt in and say, "Right, now, this is too silly".  Me.  Thinking something is too silly.

Quote:Kakashi ambled through the market square, enjoying the bright sunshine of late morning, the smells of fresh cooking, and the hum of humanity around him. It was the type of day that could put a smile on your face, and so he did just that. The smile was genuine, but not in the way most people understood it. He did not smile because he was happy, he smiled to be happy. It was the cause, not the effect. By smiling, his mind understood that it should be happy, and so it was.

The walk was pleasant, calming muscles and soothing the ever-present tense readiness that a decade of war and ANBU had ingrained into his body. A good night's sleep was, unfortunately, the least relaxing part of his day, and he spent many of his waking hours attempting to re-train his body away from that instinctive desire to kill.

Kakashi stopped briefly at a small shop front, smacking a child's hand away from the candy bins that he'd been reaching for while his mother's back was turned. Noticing an elderly lady with a number of shopping bags, he ensured he was in place to catch them by the time one started to slip, and then helped her carry them home. After he waved goodbye to her and made his way north, he passed through a park, pausing briefly to retrieve a kickball that had been stuck in a tree.

Each action he took, he burned into his mind: a reminder of simple, normal daily life, peace, tranquility, normality — the things he fought for, and killed for. The things he must never forget were the reasons he stepped onto the field of battle in the first place.

His own road of life had been a bumpy one, but as long as he could remind himself that it was worth it, he could keep going, and not dwell so much on the shadows of the past.
Best Kakashi. The actual fic is about the Team 7 kids getting their acts together in the Academy, though, with Sakura becoming a weapon specialist, Sasuke doing Genjutsu, and Naruto getting into Fuinjutsu... all in ways that are plausibly in character and which would have worked in canon if they had managed to drop their idiot balls for a little while.

The story is called "Sonata and Fugue," currently with six chapters, and it may have been mentioned before, but bears repeating for this great character moment alone.

Adding on to ClassicDrogn's recommendation, "Sonata and Fugue"'s author is actually basing the characterisations of the cast on official artwork - because the manga volumes had a ton of splash images portraying the characters in ways that never materialised in canon. Specifically, showing (pre-timeskip) Sakura with large melee weapons, Sasuke playing a flute, Naruto carrying scrolls and brushes, and so on. It's not just fighting styles; there's also certain personality cues that the fic's author is extrapolating from those promo images. This amuses me immensely, I think it's quite a brilliant concept for fanfiction.

As much as I love the source material, I have to wonder how he's going to top the trinity of Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. They already have a pretty badass situation going...

At least, if he goes that way, since Megaera doesn't exist at that point in the story. Still, I'll be reading it!

Adding on to Sonata and Fugue: If, like myself, you are often reading from a network that blocks SV and SB, the story can also be found on ffn here, though new chapters go up on SV at least a few days before they are updated on ffn.

I'm of two minds reccing this one as I know it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but:

Gladiator

It's an A:tLA AU with a couple of key differences.

1) The Airbenders are destroyed 7 years later than in canon as the Fire Lord decides to wait for the Comet to show up to do it. Aang is therefore older, partially trained as a WaterMaster (and racing back from the South Pole to save the temples) when he is caught by a storm and flash frozen.
2) Katara decides to help Gran-Gran with chores, than accompany Sokka on a particular fishing trip, and therefore does not wake the Avatar as in the show.
3) The story begins 10 years after canon - after the Fire Nation has used the Comet's return to defeat the Earth Nation completely, the Avatar is still missing and only the Water tribes remain. All the main characters are therefore in their late teens/early twenties.

Note, that this is not at any time spelt out directly during the story, which is long and focuses very heavily on character development and world building. The writing starts out as reasonable quality and improves steadily, focusing on Sokka after he is captured by the Fire Nation during a raid and sent into slavery, winding up as a Gladiator in the Fire Nation's new blood sport where bored Fire Nation Nobles bet on fights in arenas and/or sponsor fighters to compete in a ladder for prestige and political points.

Sokka eventually winds up being sponsored by Azula (and Toph by Iroh - long story).

It is a Sokka/Azula pairing but the author is building up the story very, very slowly so that the relationship is believable. Possibly too slowly for some readers.

It's a story that actually makes Azula a very strong, well rounded character - and constant exposure to the 'blockhead' is slowly giving her more to focus on than the rivalry between her and Zuko or impressing her father - thus stabilising gradually - the elements that drove her insane in canon.

I was generally under the impression the Air Temples were attacked when Sozin's comet was in the sky. Although an older Aang and the other deviations discussed sound interesting.

Yeah I'm not quite sure about that bit - either I misunderstood the point the author was making or they muffed the timeline?

The author's treatment of Kokabiel being shown there was a reason why he was one of God's commanders rather than a madman depicted in canon, makes for a great read.

I assume that it just means the AU is in the fact that the comet itself shows up seven years later than in canon - and that Sozin still waits the extra 7 years.

I was checking on an update for the Dresden / Sailor Moon fic Silver Warden, and found that the authors have instead been mixing Ranma and Touhou in glorious insanity:http://archiveofourown.org/works/219585 ... rs/4809945
Also Cap'n Chryssalid has yet another XCom crossover with a focus on character-based humor, this time with Mass Effecthttp://www.fanfiction.net/s/10550829/1/Psi-Effect
And yes, neither of these are all that new, but they are new to me and I don't recall seeing them on this board before now.
It's been a big day for me regarding finding stories.  Mass Effect / RWBY, Yang wakes up on the Citadel for reasons as of yet unexplained.http://www.fanfiction.net/s/10641435/1/Dust-Effect

I'm about twenty chapters in and so far I'd have to say this is a good fic.  Very solid character development with some great moments - the foot-in-mouth incidents between Soka and Azula here are howl-inducing.  Early on, Soka nearly makes a fatal verbal faux paus, but then turned the tables on Azula by making her almost make the same mistake herself.
It is absolutely hilarious to see these two in action.  It's almost like Ranma and Akane at their finest in the sense that Akane can actually hurt Ranma in this instance, and Ranma knows it but he's gonna get his licks in anyhow.  There's no megaton punches or other slapstick of that sort, just a lot of tit-for-tat verbal sparring that only a couple in denial can pull off.  And with this being the Fire Princess and the Mouthiest Mouth... let's just say that the view from the blimp is 'inspiring'.  Wink

Ah, thanks for the warning. R/A and tsuns in general is the relationship I hate the most. The quality of rest of it doesn't reaally matter if that's the focus.

Difference here is:

- Akane thinks she's a Princess; Azula is a Princess
- Akane thinks she's good at fighting; Azula is dangerous
- Akane feels entitled to treat people roughly, because she's a spoilt brat; Azula is spoilt - but has genuine reasons to keep people at arms length
- Akane doesn't know what she wants; Azula knows what she wants - she's just scared of the consequences

The angle the fic takes is the idea of a legitimately strong, accomplished woman stuck in a very traditional patriarchal society with her life at stake if she doesn't find a way to establish relationships she can trust. And Sokka from a matriarchal society, while yes having bad foot in Mouth disease as well as severe culture clash issues - accepts and respects her as a strong individual in her own right without even thinking about it - not as a monster, a princess or even eventually fire nation, but as Azula - with legitimate needs and rights.

And this, for Azula is unusual - it's what she wants - but she has no idea how to handle it as she's always had to be what everyone else expected.

Nonsensical fanon Akane is nonsensical and fanon.
Seriously, even in the fourth stage derivative of the English dubs she isn't tsuntsun.  Its pretty hard to argue she is even tsundere.
