Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
RE: Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach (Good Omens)
Quote: As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. Crowley, sitting in her waiting area, she was observing and assessing him. At first glance, she paid attention to the following:

--His clothing was expensive and stylish;
--He wore very strange but noticeable cologne;
--His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;”
--He looked angry;
--He was wearing sunglasses.

What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?
“We can never undo what we have done. We can never go back in time. We write history with our decisions and our actions. But we also write history with our responses to those actions. We can leave the pain and the damage in our wake, unattended, or we can do the work of acknowledging and fixing, to whatever extent possible, the harm that we have caused.”

Beware of Chicken.

A man is reincarnated into the body of a young disciple of a Cultivation sect in an Xianxia tale. Who was just beaten to "death" by a Young Master of the sect.

He decides that the whole scrambling for power in order to deal with the conseqences of the desperate scrambling for power that is the basis of the Xianxia story is a mugs game and promptly leaves to become a farmer in the most backwater area he can find.

Except that the area is such a backwater that he's significantly strong by local standards.

Except that him spreading his qi into the land as he farms is functioning as a cultivation technique making him even stronger.

Except for the farm animals . . . .

Beware of Chicken.

Seconded with the strength of nine Grand Demonic Dickpunches. I'm only on the second chapter, and this is hilarious.

In which Taylor is most definitely not a Tinker. She’s just an everyday ordinary genius whose first invention was a subspace receiver that lucked into picking up the alien equivalent of CuriosityStream.

RE: Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
Adding this here as well, since it is a new fiction:

D.D. Webb, author of The Gods Are Bastards, has started a new story. (TGAB went on hiatus around the time that American politics got really heated last year, and Webb needed a change of focus for a bit.) Only Villains Do That is their take on an isekai tale. The author's own synopsis:

While waiting on an Akihabara train platform one day, ordinary high schooler Yoshi Shinonome was suddenly plucked from his normal life in Japan
and whisked away by a beautiful goddess to Ephemera, a world of magic and adventure, to serve as her Hero and drive back the evil Dark Lord.

        This is not his story.

Standing nearby at the moment Yoshi was isekai'd was a man named Seiji - a rude, cranky, misanthropic musician who was not at all pleased to find
himself also snatched up and transported to Ephemera by the goddess's wicked sister, Virya.  According to this self-proclaimed Goddess of Evil, the
whole fantasy adventure thing was a game she and her sister played to stave off the boredom of immortality, and since the good goddess, Sanora,
had picked her Hero...well, Virya needed a Dark Lord.

Three chapters in, and it's interesting.

Post-Canon Taylor is reincarnated as one of Oberyn Martel's many illegitimate daughters. She takes advantage of her modern knowledge and slightly-expanded power to do what she can for her new family. And... Winter is Coming.

RE: Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
Sometimes, fanfiction, the best of it, takes familiar characters and settings and weaves a grand new epic out of them. Other times, a single scene slipped into the original material can alter perceptions to recontextualize or simply fill in a gap that schedules or budget or editorial decisions, really any of a hundred things might have left in the original. This is one of those latter fragments: From the end of Star Trek: Enterprise, the speech given by Jonathan Archer at the founding of the Federation, unseen in the actual show. I feel that this would have been a far more positively received way to tie ST:E together with TOS and TNG et al., but at under a thousand words I'll leave that judgement to the reader.

Those enjoying "Beware of Chicken" who want to delve deeper into the Xianxia bunny-hutch may enjoy Forge of Destiny. It started as a Quest thread over on Sufficient Velocity back in '17 and the author has been re-editing it into a full proper story.

FoD is the story of Ling Qi, daughter of a prostitute, a street-thief and gutter-rat from a minor city in the Empire, who is given the chance to join a Sect and become a Cultivator, and eventually a Noble.

Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Dark Lord by The M M is a Calvin & Hobbes crossover with Harry Potter, which does a great job of capturing Calvin's manic shotgun blast of energy for whatever he happenxs to be doing at the moment. Rather than some scene fragment, however, I will insttead present this author's note from the end of Ch3, The Robe Shop of Extraneous Dialogue, wherein Calvin has met Harry, Draco, Hermione, and Dean along with Hermione's parents and Dean's mum:

Quote:My crowning achievement - spending ten times as long inside Madam Malkin's shop as J.K. Rowling. This is my legacy, people. Remember it well.

Minerva, his minder and escort for the trip, is astonished he actually listened to her instructions to stay there until she returned and had preemptively gone looking for him, also getting the rest of his supplies save for a wand while searching though Dagon Alley. It adds up to very Calvin display of character, along with a very organic way of skipping the cliche parade through the shops, and especially the standard "meet Hermione in the book shop" scene from just about every fanfic ever that happens in Harry's year. It trails off on an unresolved plot and has gone without an update since 2015, but at a little over 133K words getting there it's a fun ride all the same.

Sith Lord Swell

Luke Skywalker and his nephew/student Ben Solo wind up back in the pre-Clone Wars republic with no way back to their own time.

Luke has a plan. Or rather he's stolen a plan and repurposed it to his own benefits. The plan was Eidun Palpatine's. Ben has a headache. And a crazy uncle. The two may be ever so slightly related.

Hogwarts: An Escalation is a short but very fun Taylor-insert where Bakuda tosses a dimensional portal grenade at her during the truce to hunt her down, and she ends up landing right in front of Daphne Greengrass in the summer after GoF. Various arrangements are made, and the current last chapter is partway through the first day of classes in what may be 1995 if the timeline hasn't been tweaked. - I would have expected Taylor to comment on being sixteen years in the past, but not necessarily, and there's nothing much requiring things be a specific year in HP as long as it's reasonably close to the modern day.

Callsign: Owl is a Worm fic that takes Taylor straight out of Brockton Bay entirely, as she's something like the Ace Combat boss flying fortress/nuclear armed stealth bomber version of a shipgirl, and entirely on the wrong scale of power to operate as a cape. That's more of an excuse for the Air National Guard to be able to keep the PRT's mitts off her, though, as the actual meat of the fic so far is Taylor's various issues, those of her assigned study partner at her new school, and the occasional interlude of various authority figures trying to keep things straight and level and not sweat too hard in public.

I'm not going to say it's funny per se, but there are plenty of fun moments and the serious stuff is well done too.

RE: Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
Celestial Fix by KrakenMo aka goldenKnife is a bit of an odd duck, it's taking Sasuke from Dreaming of Sunshine (late in canon's time skip IIRC) and tossing him into early Compass of Thy Soul. Its interesting, though, and really gets the Compass tone right even while showing a somewhat different side of it through Sasuke's eyes. It just tipped over 108k words with the update a few days ago, so there's a good chunk of it to enjoy, too. Link is to AO3.

official summary:
The inevitable result of having no teammates to ride herd on was that there is no one around to veto his bad ideas either. Sasuke cuts it closer than he should with Ichibi-Shukaku, hoping that a portal would open up with an exasperated Shikako on the other side at the last moment.

No Dice.

This isn’t Sasuke’s first brush with time travel, but everything is harder when you’re alone. The Stars are different, the way home is shut; to make a new one he must navigate the blood feud with the Senju, survive the Uchiha clan politics, and not drown in cat fur.

The road to peace is paved with pain, healing, trolling, sewing, fish, babysitting and seals that don’t explode.

Crossover between Compass of Your Soul by Umei no Mai, Dreaming of Sunshine by Silverqueen, and A Conversation Overhead By a Prisoner Faking Unconsciousness by Slow Mercury.

The Weaver Option
Worm/WH40K

In the 45th Millennium, Chaos has overrun the Imperium but now the Tyranids are devouring Chaos. In desperation, a Chaos sorcerer summons people from an alternate Earth to try to turn the tide... only for the last Ultramarine to foil his plans and the summoned beings wind up back in the 35th Millennium...

Taylor Hebert has been having a bad day. Behemoth just wiped out New Delhi, everything failed... and now she's with a ragtag regiment facing a horde of frothing green berserkers. Clearly there is only one thing to do:

Escalate.

Currently 48 chapters and 1.08 million words long. Canon 40K has been massively derailed as Taylor (and other parahumans) interfere in events.

It is not a good time to be a:-
  • corrupt Imperium Official
  • Slaneeshi cultist (or daemon (or Slaneesh him/herself))
  • Drukhari
  • any other resident of Commorragh (okay, it's practically never a good time to be a resident of Commorragh, but worse than that)
  • Necron of the Sautekh or Szarekhan dynasties (or several others)
  • Word-Bearer
  • Frateris Templaris
And the only reason Orks aren't on the list is that battle against impossible odds is their idea of a good time.

RE: Fanfic Recommendations Go Hawaiian
ShaperV's got a fic going since February-ish called Moon Shot, that I just got around to reading, and holy crap is it amazing. It's inspired by those CYOA SIs that were a fad for a while, but to paraphrase the official summary, ROB got bored with overpowered protagonists and decided to give his newest toy a little more of a challenge. Part of that is where the title comes in, on this particular version of Earth Bet String Theory's blow-up-the-moon gun actually went off, with the resulting debris in the process of a combined dust-cloud nuclear winter and multiple storms of gravel-to-fist size meteor impacts in any given square mile of the surface per day, and the Triumvirate repeatedly mentioned as being busy diverting dino-killers in orbit.

MC is a tinker who does fusion and military-industrial automation trying to build enough of a production base and life support for a bunker that can let someone survive the predicted centuries of ... well, possibly ice, possibly rampant vulcanism from the impacts, who knows yet? But he's estimated there's less than a week until things fall apart too much for there to be a government to hassle him about a lack of building permits and EPA assessments, one of the big impacts took out most of New York state and set Nilbog's critters loose, Bakuda set off an EMP in Boston and it's completely overrun by those, plus Noelle's evil parahuman clones and signs of a second, hornier, Nilbog-ish biotinker that may eventually make the fic live up (or down) to it's QQ NSFW Fiction home, but so far has only resulted in a non-explicit tentacle monster attack. The MC has met another insertee, and figures there's at least one more as well. Everything is going to hell in a tumbling katamari of handbaskets and it's glorious.

On just the first page of his Favorite Stories list, bendersalt has six or eight HP and Naruto stories I've never seen and which sound interesting. He's also got one of his own, called "Don't Be A Dobby Downer" for which the summary is one of those annoying "ask the premise as a question" one liners with no hint as to the actual content, but which (for what there is of it) is a decently amusing "Harry bunks off to Beaubatons" fic, and one that avoids many of the tired cliches of the fandom, while using some others for Good.

FFn link only, unfortunately.
