Researchers Find Evidence of a Coronavirus Epidemic 20,000 Years Ago
Quote:In a paper published in Current Biology, researchers analyzed the genomes of more than 2,500 modern humans from 26 worldwide populations, to better understand how humans have adapted to historical coronavirus outbreaks. The team, co-led by researchers at the University of Arizona and the University of Adelaide, used computational methods to uncover genetic traces of adaptation to coronaviruses, the family of viruses responsible for three major outbreaks in the last 20 years, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Extended life... for a price
(and you're an ant)
Ants with a particular tapeworm infestation live much longer (3x longer minimum) than normal.

Ancient solar storm proves Vikings lived in Newfoundland by at least 1021 CE
Paper in Nature
Quote:"We did have a good idea that they would have been [in Newfoundland] from the late 10th century to the early 11th," [Birgitta Wallace, co-excavator of the L'Anse aux Meadows site] said. "But now they have a precise date — something we hardly ever get in archeology."

Something's rotten in the state of the internet, and archivists are worried
A look at "link rot" and its consequences.
Quote:Counterintuitively, government and university websites were among the least reliable, Stanton said. She believes that because the web addresses may not change, the content on those sites is rearranged, and the content of those pages changes.

2.5 billion year old ruby contains evidence of ancient life
Yes, "ruby". This is the first time a biological inclusion has been found in a coloured gemstone (as opposed to in something like amber).

For the record, the previous launch attempt the Launch vehicle DID fall over, prompting a re-desgin of the vertical stabilty system. I'd say they succeeded?

Well, rocketry is rather like building a castle in a swamp. There's lots of falling over and burning, but if you stick with it you eventually get one that stays up.
