You forgot a step between 2 and 3, where you find out that your budget will only buy two little strips of nickel and copper with a few dollars left to rent a shovel and dig up a potato yourself, so if you want an actual computer you need to set a higher budget.

(Assuming you actually needed to set a budget in the first place, instead of making a list of what's new and shiny, adding up the total, then adding a tithe for the case and power supply and calling it a budget.)

I don't see him, either. But "everybody knows" the robot from Forbidden Planet and the robot from Lost in Space are the same... what? They aren't?

I don't see an old-school Cylon or V.I.N.CENT, either. But there's only so much room on a cover.

Heh. That reminds me of the Undocumented Features story (based on a real event from Gryphon and Zoner's college days) where a sleep-deprived Utena and Saionji slowly overload the fry bins in the WPI student center with ice, only remembering at the very last second "specific heat!"
