Hermione hadn’t had a good relationship with her government while she had a wand. One of the reasons why she currently has a ring instead. Since then, it’s improved a great deal; Cameron and the DEO have treated her fairly. There are more agencies in her new life, however. One in particular that goes under many names. One that plays in the shadows and doesn’t play fair. One she’s about to encounter as it’s time for ugly histories, inciteful analyses, and cold warnings.

You did a nice job, um, 'eroding' terms that the current population don't really understand after 400+ years of playing telephone. Like I assume 'empty blast' evolved from 'EMP blast'

Likewise I'm assuming that Socs are some sort of genetically altered supersoldier that happens to breed true?

They understand more than you might suspect, but yes, empty is EMP, and 'soc' is Special Operations Command augmented personnel that bred true. They were in a rush because Earth was losing. The tech level fell somewhere between the 1890s and 1930s because while they may not have lost all the knowledge, not having the tools or sources for refined (or even certain raw) materials makes it much harder to replicate late 20th to early 23rd-century tech.

It’s the first for all four of them caravanning together in one vehicle. And very much the longest in distance. No flying, staying on the ground the entire way, which is a novel experience for Hermione these days. What could go wrong over the next couple of weeks as they travel across America?
