"Quite an offer from the Zheng clan," Ling Qi said warily.

"Nah. My master thinks it's an investment. We missed out on big Cai, but I think little Cai's gonna shake things up, too, is all... Hrm. I best get out of here if I don't wanna get launched out the window by an irate snake. See ya later there, nutty girl."

And then he was gone, nothing more than a swirl of mist and a shimmer in the air.

"Is it that annoying when I do that?" Ling Qi wondered aloud.

A girl from a backwater village who, through a quirk of fate, managed to navigate the Howling Sword Arts Academy and come out stronger, rather than chewed up and spat out like most of the other commoners.

Who through a quirk of fate, chose to take the entrance exam to the Shrouded Mountain Sect in the same year that Bi De, Ri Zu, and Yun Ren had arrived.

All she had wanted to do was to take care of her family and hopefully strike it rich herself. That had been the goal. And now, she was trekking through the Sea of Snow on a mission to slay demons.

When she said it like that, it kind of sounded like she was a character in a story!

Hells, this entire thing sounded like a story, didn't it? There would be somebody who would read about what they did together some day. It probably wasn't her story—

It would probably be called The Celestial Heavens Defying Rooster or something, she thought with amusement, peeking at Bi De.

But that was fine. All that mattered was that Yushang didn't screw up and she got a happy ending—maybe she'd be popular enough that there would be a Yushang in every book, like how every good protagonist has a fat friend like Han!

Nate Ford and his daemon's decision to go to seminary to become a priest pleased his mother, befuddled his father, and was met with a mix of amusement, skepticism, and approval from his various friends.

I wrote this....like, four years ago, and kept second-guessing myself on posting it because I was unsure about the religion stuff here, but I have finally decided to just stop pretending it's going to get better and post it already. So, disclaimer: I am not Catholic. I am not Christian. Most of the theology discussed here I got from growing up in a culturally Christian society, plus some stuff from His Dark Materials where they talk about daemons and the Garden of Eden. I was interested in exploring what drew Nate to the clergy and what drove him away from it, not to mention how he ended up as an insurance investigator, but I am not making any broad statements about clerical work at all. Please assume that if I got anything stupendously wrong about Catholicism, it's because Catholic dogma developed differently in a world with daemons.

It never ceased to be amusing watching Hanyi play at being so well behaved.

"For our part, I will not lie that those we speak for are divided. This event has caused great alarm, and many voices call for us to withdraw entirely," Jaromila said gravely.

"Level heads understand that pretending you are not here will not make you go away, though," Dzintara said. "And the signs are… clear enough."

Ling Qi spoke up then. "I apologize for not speaking of my companion’s own prize from our audience with the spirit who named herself Grydja. I would not have wished to imply anything that was not true."
