Just in case...
03-29-2007, 03:45 AM
Considering what happened to the last shared-world we had going here, and what killed it, I've started saving off the more "important" posts. I
have yet to save any of the stories (bad Rob - they're the most important posts), but I've
got offline copies of The Rules, the Ship Registry, the characters in the Character Thread, the Glossary entries, and the Gazetteer entries.
Just in case... although I think I might end up turning them into a "writers' guide" PDF, just for fun. I'll let folks know if that happens.

Excellent idea, Rob. I've been storing a few things in MSWord documents -- copying and pasting the posts works reasonably well -- but not everything by a long shot.
I think we should probably also set up some kind of archive off the board for those stories which are complete or abandoned...

As a result of this thread, I'm mocking up a possible archive site to throw up off my eclipse.net account. It's noways near ready, but I'll let folks know when it is, have no worries. Even if nothing else materializes here, I've doneup what I think is a great banner for the pages:

I'm not terribly happy with these (but, John Lennon as The Professor? Genius!), but the muse kicked me in the shin and called me bad names, so that's what I got, cheap comedy and animated mindbendery.

Okay, I'm snagging these. Even "Fanspace", because I'm certainly going to throw a ringer in there. I just have to find or write a script to cycle through them, or randomly pick them, or something.

Back to the original purpose of this thead...
I had some time today, and went through the Character and Ship Registry threads. While doing this, I discovered that some entries aren't present. Please dont post the missing entries here; Id rather folks add them to the appropriate stickies...
Heres who and what are in the lists, as of this morning.
Ship Registry, sorted by ship class, then by name
Space Craft
SC Benten (Bob Schroeck)
SC Bullet Boy Express (BlackAeronaut)
Foundry Hephaestus Tenders - The Boys (Wiregeek)
Hyperspace Vespa (manytales00)
The Jet Car (Ebony) *
SC Kestrel Mk3 (KJ)
Millie (Wiregeek)
Mission of Mercy (Kestrel404)
HDV Nanbaras Luck (Morganni)
SC Saturn 0 (Bob Schroeck)
SC Saturn 1 (Bob Schroeck)
Vioarr (Wiregeek)
SC Virgil Samms (Rob Kelk)
Space Ships
SS Admiral Heinlein (Duane E. Peters)
Avril Arrow (Rob Kelk)
Brave Legend Shakespeare (Acyl)
ISS Delphinus (Acyl)
SS Epsilon Blade (Rob Kelk)
SS Fateful Lightning (Feinan)
The Inelegant Truth (Herr Bad Moon)
SS Magnificent Midnight (BlackAeronaut)
Maxmilian MacManus (Anpwhotep)
ISS Octopus (Acyl)
Outrigger II: The Sequel (Acyl)
SS Pinafore (Foxboy)
USSR Ptichka (M. Fnord)
Qin Shihuangdi (talienas)
SS Saint Bernard (drakensis)
SS Salvage I (Bob Schroeck)
SS Sophistical Elenchi (Firvulag)
SuperBall (Freddy Isnot)
SS Uncertainty (Griever)
World Watch One (Ebony) *
Space Vessels
The Calling Port (Allen James)
Candy Apple Reds (His Lovely Wife)
Galaxy Express 999 (Griever)
S.S Klondike III (Florin)
SSX Masaka (Evil Midnight Lurker)
SV Moondance (Valles)
Sol Bianca (Catty Nebulart)
Space Ports
Foundry Hephaestus (Wiregeek)
Spacecraft Greenwood (ECSNorway)
SS Hades (Catty Nebulart)
S. Hofwalls Field (Morganni)
Earth-Luna L5 Station Stellvia (Rob Kelk)
Space Docks
SV Grovers Corners (Bob Schroeck)
The Floating Island (Acyl)
* Yes, I know these arent quite accurate.
Hmmmmm... for a setting where the personally-waved family car is supposed to be the primary means of getting around, we certainly dont have very many personally-waved family cars... Discounting the ones that are listed as being shuttles for larger craft, weve got the Bullet Boy Express, the Hyperspace Vespa (not yet seen on-screen), the Kestrel Mk3 (in storage, awaiting manufacture of replacement parts), and the Mission of Mercy. And that list stretches the definition of car more than a bit. Ah, well... major characters are unusual people by definition, right?
In order to provide a bit of structure to the Writerss Guide (yes, I decided to go ahead with it; look for the announcement sometime next month), heres the entry format Im using for the Ship Registry list.

Hannan Wu (OPEN - Murmur the Fallen)
Eric Zhu (Acyl)
Thomas Tom Zhu (Acyl)
Fun with figures (well, I find it fun ):
The big winner in populating the Character Thread is Acyl, with thirteen characters (including the Islands dog, Titan). Herr Bad Moon and I have posted six characters each, and Foxboy has four. Catty Nebulart, Griever, and Wiregeek have described two characters each. BlackAeronaut, Bluemage, Drakensis, Duane E. Peters, Ebony, ECSNorway, KJ, M. Fnord, Murmur the Fallen, Sirrocco, Valles, and Vangeek have each posted one character.
Two of the three biggest contributors to the Character Thread also contributed Space Ports or Space Docks to the Ship Registry - Acyl (The Island) and me (Stellvia). The biggest Space Dock, Grovers Corners, has 29 characters identified by name but zero posted to the Character Thread (and I understand why).
There are five open characters on the list. Theyve all been talked about, but I dont recall seeing any of them actually used in a story...
Theres all of one bad guy character on the list: Gervasio Faustino de Leon. This indicates to me that were more interested in telling stories where the conflict is against nature, rather than against each other. (Also. while I wouldnt suggest making de Leon the person in overall charge of the Black Hats in the upcoming war, he is a good choice for a major Boskonian.)
And heres the entry format Im using for the Character List. No one character has all of these entires...:
Name
(Open character noted here; creators name)
Appearance: height, weight, hair colour, eye colour, build. Any distinguishing features.
Notable Mundane Atributes:

Wavium Ability: cute title: description
Quirks:

cute title: description

Characterization:

(Edit: Not the "Explain Star", eh? Okay... and as long as I'm updating, I'll add "Avril" to the list.)

First, because of the "southern" docking bay, which you established as being big enough to hold a "Space Ship" class vessel. That's the definition of a Dock, as it currently stands - ability to actually build or refit a ship is irrelevant.
More importantly, because I didn't want The Island to be lonely. (Yes, this is a hint to other folks...)

Well, my 'Babylon .5 Station' will have room for the Starhawk (at least), and that's a converted Cargomaster. So that may qualify as a spacedock.
Assuming I ever finish writing a story
btw, I like the 'Fenspace, next three exits' banner, Robkelk. __________________

Add me to the list of people uncertain about the ship classes.
Hofwall's Field may be a chunk of land floating around for no very good reason, but it's not a very large one. I'm not good at translating numbers to internal conceptualizations of size and distance, but it might be on par with Candy Apple Red's for overall volume. It is definately *not* on par with Hephaestus. And it doesn't have very much parking space.
For that matter, it sounds like Greenwood is noticably larger than Grover's Corners. So I really have no idea what the classes are. '.'

There's a listing in the Gazetteer, about midway down page 1.
If I understand URLs the way I think I understand them, this should take you right to the definitions.

Hmmm... Yeah, I think Space Vessel would probably be the most appropriate class for Hofwall's Field. If for no other reason than that it's not really suitable for docking with anything under any circumstances.
