Sonic screwdrivers are pretty common among Gearheads. Great for loosening stuck fasteners in all shapes and sizes. Not so good for tightening them again. Also good for detecting subsurface cracks in materials, finding weaknesses in welds, and comes with an onboard wireless connection. Any good Gearhead or mad will have built their own.

Heh... Looks like Mayo-chan's gonna be getting some British cousins.

Also, I find this engine of theirs to be rather fascinating - a hybrid of gas-turbine and rockets? Well played. I'm mostly curious about this pre-cooler setup how how they prevent a frost buildup inside the heat exchangers. Is it truly necessary to achieve temperatures as low as -130 degrees Celsius? Would 5 degrees Celsius not be sufficient?

The colder the air, the more dense it is, the more you'll suck into the engine. The more air you have in the engine, the more power you get. I think.

Also, it's not just cooling the intake air, it's heating the liquid hydrogen fuel to the point where it'll turn to gas quickly when injected into the engine bell.

Ahhh, so that's the coolant.  Figures.  You know they used the fuel itself on Blackbirds as the hydraulic fluid?  Yeah, their way of cutting down on weight - the stuff's got an obscenely high flash-point anyhow.
As for denser air... I could see that, but I would think that there would be workarounds to compensate for it.

My mom had the same problem - when I read her the headline she thought it had something to do with BSG at first until I showed her the article.

Via the Eyrie General Message Board: Topic: "Cyclone IRL"

Some Mospeada fans in Japan have made a scarily accurate reproduction of the MOSPEADA Cyclone. No - it does not transform. But it works just fine as a high-performance bike, since the inner workings are basically a Suzaki B-King. They just created all the fairings and outer parts to replicate the look of a Cyclone rider. Still - it is just a fantastically cool fan geek thing to do. ^_^

And for the fen-space angle - what if you waved this thing? ^_^
