November 25, 1940, 5:37 p.m. CST [25
NOV 2016 23:37 GMT] St. Vincent, Minnesota.

Mildred “Millie” Bannister
shrugged out of her blue woolen overcoat and, after shaking off the
light dusting of snow it had acquired in her walk home from the
library, hung it on the hook in the mudroom of the modest home she
shared with her mother. She absently tucked a strand of her blonde
hair behind her ear that had fallen out of the tight bun she wore as
the town's assistant librarian.

“Mother?” she called. “I'm
home.” She walked into the parlor and smiled at the sight. Her
mother sat in the large, comfortable chair that had belonged to her
father with her legs under a granny square afghan that she had
remembered helping her grandmother make. Her mother was knitting a
sweater while the wireless was tuned to a station playing classical
music.

“Oh?” Her mother looked up from
her knitting. “Hello, dear. How was your day?”

Millie let out a frustrated sigh. “All
sorts of flabble about that 'Mysterons' hoax. And of course, since
I'm a librarian, they assume I know what's going on with it.”

“Well, don't you maintain poor
Johnny's subscriptions to those Zap Gun Pulp magazines and spend an
inordinate time watching those Republic serials at the Bijou?” her
mother asked with a gentle smile. It was tinged with sadness, as
Millie's older brother had died five years ago serving in the Army up
in Canada.

Millie spluttered. “Well of course I
do! I just don't know anything about the sort of person who could
override all of our wireless stations. Probably some sort of kook who
worked it up after that Welles Fiasco last Halloween.” She set her
newest copies of Analog and Astounding on the side table by her chair
and made her way to the kitchen. “Do you want anything special for
supper?”

“I'm sure whatever you make will be
fine, Mildred.” Her mother's smile widened. “You're such a good
cook, dear. When are you going to get married?”

“Mother,” Millie chuckled at the
old barb. “I'm twenty-three, I still have time.” She started a
pot to boil for rice and went to the icebox for the beef she'd bought
yesterday. “Besides, all the good men around here are taken, or are
the sort that frown on an 'educated' woman like myself.” She sighed
and returned to her cooking, daydreaming about a man who would not be
intimidated by her intelligence, or love for cheesy science fiction.

One wonders whether Miss Bannister is related to somebody already Up. Although, one suspects that, if she isn't, she will be.

(Too bad that St. Vincent is as far from Wisconsin as you can get and still be in Minnesota. The Swansens hail from Wisconsin, and Minerva is blonde, just like Miss Bannister... Fenspace's Mildred could have been Leda and Minerva's great-grandmother, if not for the improbability implied by the geography.)

People can move around quite a bit. My maternal grandfather has lived in no fewer than three provinces, always dragging part of his family with him when he moved. My doubly-paternal great-great-grandfather (that is, my paternal grandfather's paternal grandfather) was an immigrant to BC from the British Isles (I've forgotten exactly where; my ancestry includes, among at least a half-dozen other nationalities, English, Irish, Scots, and possibly Welsh). My sister's fiancée and her family came to the Vancouver area from Minnesota, though I don't know where in particular (is there an area with an unusually large Ukrainian-American population?).

VVS EXFOR Staging Platform, Earth-Luna L2

The space station at L2 was pretty paltry compared to others in the immediate area, a thing of girders, wires and simple canisters. It wasn't designed to be the hub of a huge Fenspace-wide diplomatic and (more than likely) military effort. Still, the EXFOR staging platform was where the ships were, and as General Fnord was prone to say, “Needs must as the devil drives.”

General Fnord now stood on the platform's observation deck and watched as the diplomatic mission down to Earth assembled. Anchored to the platform, the GCU Laika took on supplies while the space shuttle Discovery gently hovered down onto the anchor points on Laika's back. Out past the platform, the Grover's Corners held a respectful distance; the great bulk of the mobile homestead could have crushed the platform if it had gotten too close.

“We do travel in style, don't we?” announced Ben Rhodes, coming up from behind.

Mal gave him a sidelong look. “Seven elephants. And what are you doing here? You should be transferring command over to the Corners.”

“Annika's handling all the moving. I wanted to check my orders one last time... and say 'good luck.'” Ben stuck out his hand. “I know I'm going to need it more than you, but we'll both need it.”

“We make our own luck,” Mal objected, but shook on it anyway. “And your orders haven't changed; talk to Featherston, try to get him to see that he has no friends in the world and that planning a vengeance war plus slaughtering a good chunk of his population won't win him any more, then don't get upset when he refuses.”

“Oh, this will be fun,” Ben grinned savagely. “Of all the Mundanes out there, I'm going to enjoy freaking this one.”

“Ben,” said Mal gravely, “don't take this too lightly. Featherston's the most dangerous guy we've ever tried to make a run on. He's a lot of things, but he's not stupid. If he sees a weakness he can exploit, he'll exploit it.” He said the last thing looking over Ben's shoulder. Ben half-turned, taking a glance back and seeing his wife goofing off with their daughter.

Ben turned to look back at Mal. “You honestly don't think...?” he trailed off, leaving the implication open.

“I don't know. But if he thinks he's found a weakness...” Mal shook his head. “All I'm saying is, be careful, okay?”

And here... we... go!

OOC: BA: Is Ben bringing his whole staff on the Corners? Senshi, Fezigs, Ayanami and all? I'm sketching out some shipside stuff and I want to make sure I have the right cast at hand. Thanks!

OOC: Bob, Mostly just the Troops: Sailor Atalante's team (spec-ops), a few squads of squads of Sammies (marines - sixty bodies), four Peacemakers (three are kitted for bombing runs, but the Tough Love is configured as a drop-ship), six C-130s (four are packed with Hi-Lux trucks and won't need to be docked - just on-station somewhere), a couple of wings of Fezigs (escorts), two Veritechs (landing assault), the Midnight (inteligence), and the two Firefoxes (shock and awe).
The middle-management is still gonna be handled at 36 Atalante - Jess is still there, along with everyone else making sure things run smoothly.

Having worked the economics for http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/topic/7077, I can safely say that Grover's Corners is playing host to all of the Senshi Marines here, both regular and reserve. Which means Yayoi's there, taking orders from Ben.

(It costs a lot of money to feed, house, equip, and keep in fighting trim even one soldier - money that the voters insist can better be spent elsewhere during peacetime. Crystal Tokyo only has $260,000/month for all of its military needs during peacetime, including Coast Guard, and it's the largest Crystal City...)

OOC: I just realized something. Benjamin has Stitch. What better way to show a man - a very inteligent man - that the Fen are not lightweights by turning loose a terror that is design to wreke havok upon cities?

I think he'll decide it is just that... a terror weapon, and use it as a casus belli

Hrm... point. Besides, 'eesha nanikrishna' (line that he used to great effect on the Galactic Councel) would have zero effect on these guys. Wink

I'll think of something suitably over-the-top for Benjamin to do... though part of me is tempted to pull a Gendo Ikari Meets The President. And there is the already-planed orbital strike.

Considering the culture of the CSA, a white man showing up with an asian woman on his arm is already over-the-top. But if you really want to blow their little minds, introduce them to the Rolling Stones. Or the Ramones. Or Jimi Hendrix.

Oh! Give Featherston a big, wide-screen, LCD TV and a copy of Schindler's List on DVD. Then quietly tell him what the rest of the world thinks of so-called "Final Solutions". Not flashy, but it may be effective...

Korolev AFB, Luna

"General, this is EXFOR Staging, we've got a ship called FSPV FLEGG sitting on the outer boundary requesting to dock."

"Interesting. What're they here for?"

"They say they're from Don Antonio, sir. Should we let them in or wave 'em off to Kirby?"

"Hm."

"Sir?"

"Ask them what Don Antonio sent them to do. If they're part of the scientific effort, wave them off to Odyssey. If not, bring them aboard and get them into the briefing room; Shad or KJ or I will holoconference them from here. Oh, ask them if they have infiltration experience. That could prove... useful."

"Will do, General."

ooc: just a quick bit to move things along. Depending on how badly "Jules" wants to stay away from the Professor, he might get his wish. With luck he'll live to regret it.

"Flegg, this is EXFOR. What did Don Antonio send you to do for us?"

"Comic Relief?"

"JULIAN!"

"EXFOR, Flegg. We're a couple of generalists, Don Tony said whatever you need us to do, we do. Not really Blue Hair types, unless you want it to fail spectacularly, and you know how any Julian feels about working with the Professor."

"Any Infiltration skills FLEGG?"

"Well I learned investigative journalism with my momma's milk, and Julian's Dane to the core. We could probably fit in just fine as long as you didn't expect us to make things go boom. Well, unless you like getting a bigger boom than you bargained for."

Pretty close-on, a point might be "Doctor Hopper" being a favorite beverage when he doesn't need the buzz of alcohol, make note of the Virginian accent, and, if he makes any appearances where he's on his "down time" his floppy straw hat. Again, if we embarrass him too fully, he WILL hold a grudge. And, has been noted earlier these guys don't flinch from WMDs.
