[meta] Expect more Senshi illustrations...
01-28-2011, 04:55 AM
...now that I've discovered http://www.realmofsavage.com/ProjectSailorMoon.htm]Project Sailor Moon, the one-stop resource location for Poser/Daz resources to turn the base characters into Sailor Senshi.
Looks like I'm going to have to re-do the Leda image... but now I know where to get the hairdo for A.C. Peters. (ducks and covers)

It can be slow. (Okay, the first load of the session usually is slow.) Try reloading once or twice, or waiting for a minute and trying again.

It's not that it's slow, it's that it can't be found. The domain itself is in the Wayback Machine, but Project Sailor Moon is not.

OK, now it's working.
I'm thinking they need to arrange a better server.

I'm just happy the files are available and free. (And, since there are issues with the server disappearing occasionally, I've pulled back the entire set.)

Ooh, http://www.vanishingpoint.biz/productde ... uctID=2096]look what else I've found... although I'll have to pay for this one, so I don't have it yet.
Although this means I now need to know what the Roughriders' uniforms look like. That, or BA needs to get a copy of DAZ Studio and do the renders himself.

Oooh! Rob, I will gladly fork over the ten bucks for you to have that.
And how easy is DAZ to use? I'm no artist, you see...

blackaeronaut Wrote:And how easy is DAZ to use? I'm no artist, you see... As long as you've got a decent computer (and I recall you just bought a new one), DAZ is reasonably easy to learn - it's an entry-level 3D modeling program.
Set up an account on the DAZ site (you don't need to give them anything other than a name and an email address until you start paying for things), download http://www.daz3d.com/i/software/daz_stu ... nload?_m=d]the software, register the software (at the link on the same page), then download the figure models from the http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/free-3 ... t=382&_m=d]free content section. You want to get, at minimum, "Victoria 4.2 Base", "Stephanie 4 Elite Base", "Michael 4 Base", and "The Kids 4 Base" for realistic renders (and "The Freak 4 Base" for muscle-men), and "Aiko 4 Base", "Hiro 4 Base", and "the Girl 4 Base" for anime-style renders. (You won't be able to do everything I can with the morphing figures, but that's enough to put some people around the SR-71.)
You'll probably want some clothing and hair for the figures, and some props and backgrounds for the scenes. Some of these you'll have to get from places other than DAZ Studio.
Free clothing:
Free props:
Free backgrounds:
Assorted freebies (sometimes hosted at sites with pay content) - "V4" products work with Victoria 4.2, "M4" products work with Michael 4, "K4" products work with The Kids 4. ("V3" products work with Victoria 3, also available at the DAZ freebies page. "M3" products work with Michael 3, and so on. Ignore Texture Sets for now - they're re-colourings of other products, which might not be free. "Poser" props and backgrounds usually work with DAZ.) - http://www.antonkisieldesigns.com/~akfi ... figure.htm]Apollo Maximus - another free "muscle-man" figure, this site has the figure, clothing and hair that fit the figure, and a selection of famous faces. (Don't get the "Facial Appliances"; they're for Poser, not DAZ. In the third-party section, get the "DAZ Materials" or ".obj models" selections.)
- http://www.most-digital-creations.com/freestuff.htm]Digital Creations - 46 pages of assorted freebies (some NSFW, many add-ons for paid content).
- http://www.poserdirect.com/freebie.html]PoserDirect - look for the "Hondo" hoverbike, the TRON car, and the city/village backgrounds
- http://www.vanishingpoint.biz/freestuff.asp]Vanishing Point - more SF freebies than you can shake a lightsaber at (including over a dozen lightsabers), and there's a Sten gun in the "Military > General" section
- http://www.ageofarmour.com/3d/free/index.php]Age of Armour - look for "Paola Character" (gives Victoria a Latina coloration), "US Army Patrol Cap" for Michael 4, and a bunch of hand weapons
- Faerie Dreams http://faerie-dreams.com/page_2.html]current and http://faerie-dreams.com/page_3.html]vintage free downloads - at least one piece of clothing for each of the free models at DAZ. (It's good to give a pre-teen something to wear...)
- http://www.sharecg.com/b/5/3D-Models]ShareCG - lots of stuff, (free) account required to download anything. Under the "Format" list on the left-hand side, check "DAZ Studio *.daz *.ds *.dsb", "OBJ (.obj)", and "Poser (.pz3, .pp2)" before searching.
More sites later - I have to logoff right now...
Edit: Oh, yes - do not get "dynamic clothing"; it doesn't always work with DAZ. Get "conforming clothing" instead.

Another big content site: http://www.renderosity.com/]Renderosity A free account is required before you can download any free content. However, once you have an account there, you can make a "public" wishlist of files that other members can buy for you. (For example, http://www.renderosity.com/homepage.php ... rid=697698]here's my Renderosity wishlist. Note how many hairdos and figure-appearance morphs are on my list - free props are relatively easy to find, free hair is not so plentiful.)

Poser Free Stuff
02-01-2011, 02:52 AM
Daz is a great resource, and their membership is really worthwhile as the Platinum club is loaded with 2.00 products; free models every week and lots of other promos. For the Sailor styles there is a free anime clothing pack for the Aiko3 figure.
Keep and eye at http://store.smithmicro.c...ctDetails.aspx?pid=10430
I have used Poser and Daz, and Poser beats it hands down. Version 8 is the current version, but they sometimes offer specials on Poser 7 on the cheap. If you do a lot of 3dwork it is worth the cash. Keep and eye open for 3dworld magazine as well - it normally comes loaded with a dvd with free figures; and software.
I do a lot of of 3-d work, so if you have questions - I have answers, suggestions and a huge model library - with recommendations (I will occasionally do character sketches to.)

Another something about poser

When you buy poser (any version) you get an arseload of excellent free content.
Oh, and for hair models Kozaburo has created a huge number of excellent free resources; http://digitalbabes.jp/

Thanks for the link for the hairdos! I'm trying to standardize on V4 for my default model; is it just a matter of parenting V3 hair to that figure to use it, or is some more difficult conversion required?

V3/v4 hair
02-01-2011, 04:48 AM
They have different geometries - many hairs have fits for both - or Daz has a conversion system that lets you modify v3 hair for v4.
More 3d thoughts
02-01-2011, 04:41 PM
One more thought.
Manage multiple libraries. Seriously. Do it.
I maintain seperate libraries for figures based on the source.
Daz3d
Downloads_Free_Commercial (Allowed in commerical renders based on the usage agreement)
Downloads_Free_Non_Commercial (Non-commerical usage only)
Renderosity
etc.
Runtimes (Poser - Daz has an equivalent) get very crowded very fast. You have to spend some cycles in management or they become unwieldly and it becomes a challenge to find anything.

More freebies... Once you have your Daz3D account, stop by the forums and pick up your http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?p=2666811]Christmas presents - or, at least, the presents that don't depend on you owning something you haven't bought yet. (All of those freebies use the standard Daz licence.)
Edit: And look at the other free stuff in the "General Freepozitory" and "DAZ Freepozitory" forums. (Like http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=157548]this one - you'll recognize his foul stench the moment you're aboard, so it is of course required for a Warsie render, along with some of http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuf ... _id=695239]these Renderosity freebies. Re-edit: Old-school Whovians would want the first freebie, too...)

That SR-71 model is now available from Renderosity (for $12 instead of $10), and is also now on http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/wish ... rid=697698]my wishlist, which means anyone with an account there can buy it for me.
It's on sale until Friday, so one way or another it won't be on my wishlist after Thursday...

I've also noticed that freebies used to be free for a month, now they're often free for only a week. Loot the http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/free-3 ... t=382&_m=d]free models section while you can.
