You know, the 'USS=warship' thing isn't actually true. It just means the ship is flagged to the US, and is of suitable size. I've heard of cargo ships with the USS prefix, as well.
Far as I know ONLY commissioned ships of the US navy use the USS prefix. The navy does employ cargo ships however, but most of those should be part of Sealift command. Which uses a different prefix normally.

There's the 'Alabama Star', which had the USS prefix. The cargo vessel that got hijacked off of somalia and who's captain saved himself by shooting his captors.

"How did you know it was me?"
"Miku, please. A mysterious power-armoured female vigilante calling herself 'Vision' shows up the same week you reveal you're fronting a Priss and the Replicants tribute act as a side project? It wasn't that hard to figure out. Though using your real voice as a double-bluff was a nice touch. So... Let's talk business."

"Well, we did the cost analysis and with our new budgetay environment, it turns out, using the old Dryden SR-71 to test the engines made the most financial sense, rather than designing a suspersonic airframe from scratch.... There's no rmance in it at all, we're a government agency, we're not allowed to be romantic. The taxpayers wouldn't stand for it."
