If "Commando_77" spent the Boskone War working as a medic, a Zig mechanic or even a cook then that's fine by me. Why wouldn't it be? The vast majority of my military service was spent flying a transport helicopter; I was nearly half-way to retirement age before I ever fired a weapon outside of the range.

But I reserve the right to be a little annoyed at anyone stridently critiquing the actions of an individual with multiple citations for bravery, and rebuffing any suggestion of mitigating circumstances, if it turns out they have never personally endured more than minor inconvenience for their fellow Fen.

As opposed to the minor inconvenience of watching a video or even reading the OP?

Lun fired an anti-shipping missile at a shuttlecraft barely larger than the missile that hit it, loaded with a warheadthat rattled stations dozens of kilometres away. If she shot to disable - that's like shooting to disable a man, using an artillery cannon. He is 'disabled'. He is also scattered across the field. The only warning the pilot received was a lock-on tone - enough for a panicked distress call which was interrupted by the sound of the spacecraft disintegrating around her. There're a dozen recordings of it online alone.

This is the same person who may have spaced the individual responsible for the inadvertant biomod of Daryl Haur, and then staged an accident to cover it up. The Venusian Aerospace Accident Investigation report on the incident all but said the crew were covering 'something' up, but had to take their story at face value as all evidence otherwise had been destroyed.

> nobody wanted to believe that someone high up in the Sammies could be dirty either

And this is the exact sort of attitude that allows these crises to fester rather tha being stopped before they become a problem.

I've seen it before in Cons since long before fenspace was the thing, where some local BNF would get a free pass from the con-com for some 'untoward and unosciable' behaviour, solely because they were a popular big name fan, or did some good a long time ago and 'one of us'. The amount of shit that got covered up or brushed under the covers just to maintain a public face, and the havoc it caused..... that's why I do what I do. A person's good deeds or best intentions cannot absolve their sins.

Conspiracies is hopping. They've never had a troubleshooter publically outed in such an off the cuff way before - and it's only just starting.

That may just be who she is in public. Remember that she also spent a year or more planning the Lun mission. And she almost got away with it too. Nobody even saw it coming. We still don't know the full truth - just that she was the one who fell on her sword when it got found out and took sole responsibility. Nobody knows who she was really working for, where all the funding really came from or what the real objective was - or if she was really working for herself.

No remember the source material. What did that impulsive Lingerie saleswoman do by night.... Even if she lacks the silver hair.

Not sure that's applicable here; or maybe it really is. Also really doubt you 'don't remember' THAT source material. Only source that seems to be watched more (based on hit counts) belongs to the Sammies.

However, the 'silver haired shop owner' referenced did happen to spend her nights as a mercenary/vigilante in power armor in a quest to take down the EVIL CORP that killed her father and is still profiting from its work. However, I've always been under the impression that Jet was more Priss that Sylia; certainly it fits the persona that we the 'unwashed masses' see in the webfeeds. Yeah, Yeah; I know Con-spiral-sees swears up and down that S. Stingray is ALSO Jet; personally I think that anyone who could be so convincingly two different people is either overdue to have their head looked at or such a good actor that maybe this 'renegade' act is yet another version of her, as you so nicely put it "falling on her sword"

Not only have they been in the same room as each other. They've been recorded as being on different planets, publically, at the same time. Let Conspiracies have it's ball. It's just a conjoined fandom.

>>such a good actor that maybe this 'renegade' act is yet another version of her,

In that case, she's destroying her future, her reputation and burning her bridges, for what possible gain? It's one thing to fall on your sword and take the blame for a botched op..... this is more like falling on your own grenade.

Is it worth it?

Nobody sane and capable of planning something like this would think so, unless they were really dedicated to their duty.

I think we see her real self in public. Jet the Priss. It's who she was before the Boskone war hit.

Then, she's also the person capable of giving this TED talk, on cybernetics and how they actually effect their recipients, and especially cybernetic ethics. Worth watching, unless you have a particular love for cockroaches. That's Jet the Engineer.

Then. We get Jet the Warrior. A martial arts instructor. A decorated veteran. A cybernetic weapon. But damaged.

It's possible to be all three at once without ever requiring any sort of multiple personalities or something daft like that. Like a clover can have three leaves but still be the one plant.

Not all Mary Sues are simple wave-formed cardboard cuttouts.

And in related news I'm hearing that at least five people on Frigga have been arrested by the Space Patrol. Most of them are listed as reactor operators and system operators.

I'm also hearing seventeen serious radiation injuries. And one near fatality sent to Mars to get a scamble nine.

What the hell was going on out there?

Could this have something to do with Lun's armament?

Before anyone asks, and becase I've been spammed to death on this, we really don't know anything.

The first warning anyone had of this was when the Space Patrol came knocking. Which sort of put the wind up a lot of people who might've panicked.

I know most've them and they aren't bad people. I can't really imagine any of them being in on anything like this. I can't imagine there being anything that big a secret out here. It's a small community and stuff like this would get out. It's almost impossible to keep secrets.

It look to be completely unrelated. They're calling it an ARSE violation. Somebody might've been radioing the logs, and this accident popped the lid off it. Oops.

And yes Lily, rads are nasty things. Which is why the Active Reactor Safety Evalutation is a thing.

There is also the question of why. Which could be anything from laziness, to actively trying to hide something sinister.

Or, you know, just trying to keep this place running when all these bureaucrats in their offices in Venus don't even understand the reality of what's required to keep a settlement like this, this far out, alive - they just impose their own petty rules and regulations just to prove to their little hitler egos that they have the power to do so. It's easy to do in Tokyo, but out here where things actually get old and break.

I know the operating team. Most of them are my friends. None of them meant anything malicious. The datalogger probably broke and someone couldn't fix it. And because you can't keep a reactor operating without the logging system, they falsified the logs until it was fixed. But it got overlooked when something else broke until, I dunno, the logger reported everything was OK when the core had burned down.

I work maintenance and there're so many corners we have to cut to keep the basics going - shit that'd make hairs stand on end, but it's always because something's either missing, or two weeks away, or just not possible to get anymore because it hasn't been made in fifteen years so the entire system has to either be duct-taped back together to keep it running for another week or bypassed and overriden.

It's a Belter settlement, not a Crystal city. But the Cities don't understand that.

Everything has gone quiet otherwise.

My usual contacts have gone quiet.

Right.

I'm trying to do some complex things with this story.

It's supposed to be the last Jet story, finishing out her character arc in some way. I thought about ending it with her death or something but that'd be a bit like taking my toys and going home. It might also destroy the genre directive.

Maybe the best way to complete her story might be something else.

We're creating a fake data model here, to make it look like Jet's snapped after ten years of stress. She's pushed to the edge by being out of her depth and competence zone running a settlement and just barely keeping it from collapsing - and then someone 'kills' her brother. The world that is now doesn't really let her do what she's 'good' at anymore - and what she tries to do afterwards she isn't really succesful enough at to make a worthwhile living - because in a reputation economy, nobody can really see her as being capable of anything else. Not to the point of parting with money.

So. Who better to be defeated by a fake data model than Profeta? And, by extension, maybe Asmodeus Grey.

They wanted Mackie because of his membership in a certain club - tried to fake his accidental death while kidnapping him, and inadvertantly ended up actually 'killing him'. There' an irony in there.

And it closes the circle on the War side of Jet's character by letting her do the warrior thing one last time in a universe that doesn't really need it anymore, even if it doesn't answer the question of 'What Next'?

I'll leave it up to everyone else to decide how succesful she is after that.

Oh, I hope not - because that's how I plan to bring "the last Noah Scott story" to a climax. I've been dropping hints about that for years (including his wife's middle name).

That said, I like what you've described better than simply killing Jet.

Yeah. I think Jet's fate is mirroring my own humour in a lot of places. Maybe I shouldn't be letting my own moods affect innocent character like doing a fucking Anno

Jet's a warrior, but there're no wars left to fight. The Knight Sabers have little left to do to the point of being redundant. Things are getting better. The big question Jet faces is, what now?

I'm trying to give Jet realistic problems. And a real stress from facing a future here she might not be able to do things that either matter, or make people think she matters and respect her, anymore.

Meanwhile, Mackie' story is continuing in its own direction. Everyone Likes Gaige.

This may finally be coming to an end.

Thirty minutes ago Port Phobos just reported Lun's transponder coming active in their space. Lun, using her revoked Hiroshima registration, being escorted by a light shuttlecraft named Starlight Breaker. Visual contact confirmed this was in-fact, White Stallion.

Both ships ignored any attempt at hail, maintaining direct course for Odyssey Station. Visual observation confirmed battle damage to both. Lun's full missile load had been expended, with her silo hatchess open.

Both ships issued a request for secure docking, and a maximum security detail for transfer of multiple prisoners. One, class A. One, Class S. Multiple conventional.

Ten minutes ago, both were permitted to dock.

So, because I know the Interweave is gonna explode because of this;

1) Jet was working under my direct orders, as was Lun once she was read in. Both disagreed, but I overrode both of them. You want to complain, the buck stops HERE.

2) Odyssey Station is under Code 37 lockdown, under my authority. You WILL be shot down if not authorised.

3) Because of the nature of the threat, a disinformation campaign was instigated. You'll need to wait for the court records for the full story.

SO, you wanna complain; complain to me. Maybe you'll be lucky and have an actual point and I'll respond, but it's all in the hands of the courts now.

Immediate Press Release

Jupiter Mining Corporation currently has one ship docked at Odyssey Station, Blue Midget 12, which was scheduled to depart midday on April 20th.

Please be aware that, do to recent events and short notice provided for those events, that ship is currently part of the Code 37 Lockdown that occurred this morning. As part of JMC procedure for Code 37 protocol, her engines have been deliberately disabled to prevent her being used as a potential escape craft.

All deliveries aboard her will be delivered as soon as legally possible. In the meantime, refunds and alternate solutions are being offered to affected customers; the events occurring are beyond our control, but we also know that our customers may not be in a position to weather any sort of potential delay without some form of compensation.

At this time, Station Odyssey remains under Code 37 lockdown. Stellvia Corporation apologizes for the inconvenience. Stellvia Corporation does not apologize for firing on the ship whose transponder identified it as Great Justice Commander Suzumiya's private launch - when we said any unauthorized approach would be fired upon, we meant it. Also, we know full well that Great Justice Commander Suzumiya's private launch is not the same class ship as that ship.

Stellvia Corporation acknowledges the assistance of Rogue Squadron (out of Mos Eisley), the USS Bjarni Tryggvason (out of Starbase 1), and the UN Spacy Mars Force (out of Marsbase Sara) for assistance in maintaining the lockdown.

Let me be the first here at 36 Atalante to say: Thank Skuld!!!

Seriously, you guys weren't the only ones being subjected to misinformation. Even though I know in my heart that Jet would never fly off the handle over some fit of pique... something happening to Mackie would do it.

Let me clue you guys in, here. Mackie's like family to us here. He's always been hounding me with ideas about rat-rodding the living hell out of my engines. And I have obliged the kid because A) he's a good kid and B) I do love an absolutely ridiculous WTF-inducing project build. And so when we heard the news here, our hearts all went out to Jet.

Jet Jaguar, we have seen your manifesto, and we welcome you back.

Now I'll let you guys see MY manifesto.

Let it be known that a full Interceptor/Strike Package has been dispatched, spearheaded by the A-Team, to Station Odyssey to make absolutely certain that Profeta and Asmodeus Gray face justice.

This is not a unilateral decision. This is a Great Justice-authorized mobilization under the PEPPER Accords. You will find the mobilization order in the attached paste-bin link. Feel free to verify it yourselves. I know some of you out there love to paint me as a villain just because I happen to command one of the strongest paramilitary forces in the system.

And to show you just how serious we are, let me enlighten you folks: I am personally commanding this Strike Package from the marginal comforts of Roughrider One.

Asmodeus Gray and Profeta are that big of a deal, people. They represent the very worst of what humanity has to offer. If we are ever to maintain what we are and what we have achieved as a society - nay, as a SPECIES - then we must stamp out this threat the very moment the opportunity presents itself!

That said, let's not lose our heads going revenge-happy. We're not only en route to prevent a potential escape, but to also ensure that there will be no attempts to circumvent our system of justice. Trust me, people. They'll get what's coming to them. There will be no two ways about it. Too many of us hate these bastards' guts. They have no friends or allies among the SMOFs or the BNFs.

Some of us are going to call for death. Some of us are going to call for fates worse than death. Some of us will even call for things that would make us no better than they are.

I'll tell you right now, I'm voting for death. It's quick, it's simple, and it eliminates the possibility of these diseased organs of our society causing us any more grief and harm. Prisons should be for people that could be rehabilitated (and I feel prisons should reflect that as well).

Call Jet and I villains if you like. You already know what most Belters think of us, though. You want to see us gone, you need to change THEIR minds. And I doubt that's gonna happen, because what I do out here is far too precious of a thing.

Good night, people. I need to get some shut-eye before we hit Odyssey Station.

OOC: A Roughrider's Strike Package consists of a Peacemaker with attendant fighters, two AC-130 gunships, a pair of A-10 Warthogs to do what the AC-130s do, only backwards and in high-heels.  Wink

An INTERCEPTOR/Strike Package, on the other hand, has all that... plus two Blackbirds for fast movers, a MiG-31 Foxhound of the ones that think they're being sneaky, and an Outlaw-class kitted for manual retrieval and boarding.

And on top of that, Ben and Gina will be there with Roughrider One, along with their personal VF-4 Lightnings.

Overkill?  Maaaaaayyyyyyybbbeeeeeeee.....  Wink

It also eliminates the possibility that we could get a cure for the Catgirling Machine out of Grey.

Okay, I guess I gotta be the spoilsport here.

Once you mix two complex systems together, you ain't getting them separated again. It's like tryin' to take the milk back out of milk tea.

And there ain't a system more complex than a person.

While I respect your knowledge of high-energy physics, biology is a completely different science, and different rules apply there.

Hasn't somebody been working on the catgirl genome and identifying the differences between it and the baseline human genome?

Yeah - my stepmother, for one. That doesn't mean she can take them apart and put back together just the person.

It doesn't mean she can't, either.

The All Seeing Eye (Not Who you think)

I wont be the only one who's thinking this. I get the establishment's trying to cover for her. Yeah, everything she did was under *our* control. The snarling puppy was on a tight leash. But I'm sure those orders could've been summarized in three words or less.

Don't fuck up.

It's easy to sanction success, after the fact. But I doubt she would've been 'under direct orders' if there'd been any real blowback from this stunt.... or if things had fallen flat.

You gotta admit, there's only one person here who'll go that far out on a limb on a whim. I don't know if she was asked to, or if she came up with the idea herself.

But if anybody thinks Jet is incapable of putting together an intelligent plan, I invite them to look into what's publicly admitted about Arcadia - or, more importantly, even after she grabbed the Mess Webley on that one - what still isn't known.

Because she's the one controlling the narrative the entire time. And by the time anyone realised it, the real truth had long been smothered.

Can take the Texans out of Texas...

It is, after all, a Jet story. It's bringing the majority of her story in Fenspace to an end, with one last chance to say to the universe, I do have a purpose and I am good at some things.

One thing I changed early on was Jets TS rank and actual capabilities and skills - they're what they need to be to suit the story, no more or less. Jet's story's aren't supposed to be about what she can do, it's what she does and what the result is. The worst ones are where I fail to hit that point.

I thought far more carefully about that post, because the one thing I avoided trying to do for the last 6 years was create a power race.

And, I tend to see the Troubleshooters working in a more ad-hoc way, rather than in a formal regiment - by agreement, reputation and cooperation, and somewhat anarchic rather than rank and file. You're good at this sort of shit, I'm good and breaking that, let's stop that bad guy. A bit like Firewall, but not quite. Although, maybe that's not what the universe sees. I like the idea of 'public' face of troubleshooters being a misdirection too.
