Virtue is its Own Reward 2.0 Discussion Thread

Oh, bravo, Bob. Very well done. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of a way to "come out of the closet", as it were, and bam. You
just *do* it.

Awesome. Big Grin

(It helps that Eva is the leader of Rhea's supergroup, of course. Hard to argue with the lady when all she has to do is point at Eva and smirk re: the
hero biz. Smile

Nice bit Bob. 2 things though threw me a bit.

first, a typo
Raye just blew a raspberry before taking another bite of the horribly nutated cheesesteak she'd been duped into buying
Looks like you mistyped 'mutated'.

the other was the New Brunswick mention. I'm Canadian, so the first New Brunswick that comes to mind is the province. 8P

Either that, or the Grease Truck guys have started adding dessert to the sandwiches, in the form of Nutello. Mind you, it always goes wrong with dessert....

I was doing my own bit of Google Mapping to see if I could, from the story cues alone, figure out Eva's route. I don't know if I did, but I did
discover that your town is like the awesomest modern-horror RPG setting ever, Bob.

I mean, my town has a decent cemetary known as Thousand Steps, next to a community college... you've got _Resurrection_ in the name of yours! That's
_begging_ for a zombie uprising!

Plus a deactivated military base _right there_...

I'm jealous. Big Grin

I also misspelled "Eremite" as "Emerite". Both are fixed now.

Spud, I presume you mean Camp Kilmer? Half of that is now the Kilmer Campus of Rutgers University...

Oh, and Timote? Sorry to confuse you.

Okay, some thoughts that struck me while brainstorming the next few parts.

As I recall, when word of what's happened with the Event gets a bit widespread, folks are going to start referring to the changed as Virtues, right? It
occurs to me that, in that case, it might quickly get repurposed to mean heroes only as supervillains might quickly get tagged "Vices".

And I may have asked this before, but ... does the appearance of supers in the "real" world change things so that "native" supers start
appearing? In other words, is the Virtue Event wider-ranging than it appears at first?

Another odd thought. If the Virtue Event is localized to just people on Virtue server, what about characters who can give other people powers due to the
character concept? Oh, mine can't. But I'm sure some people's backstories would include stuff like that. So what if someone like that got powers?

I do believe that Fox had intended for 'origins' to start happening to other normal people back when the first iteration of this was going about. It is
a possibility, that's for sure.

Yes, there were plans for that. I recall some discussions with Fox and Valles about, for example, the Internet becoming this dimension's version of ley
lines... resulting in some technomages and a more-sane version of the Freakshow...

Precisely. I'm sure that by Halloween or the Autumn Equinox, there's gonna be some sort of "Granola" occultist that is going to be the first non-Virtue "high-level" mage. But there may be some "skript kiddies" earlier if any of the technomages from among the Virtue pool start "open sourcing."

Again, the total number of "Virtues and Vices" is fixed. These are going to be the "S" to "A" tiers of VIIOR Superhumans, at least initially. Most other folks from new origins are going to enter the scale at "C" or worse.

OF course, this refers to power alone. The scale starts at S for "Over the top" powerhouses like Superman, Marvel's Thor, "Rainbow Lantern" Hal Jordan, and the like.

A represents "big name" heroes of "wow" power like the entire Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Flash, etc.

C & D represent the Great Lakes Avengers, or Joke characters. MAYBE the hero of a small city in the DCU or say the only hero in Abilene, Kansas, in Marvel-616.

As far as the "origins" fluff from the game goes... Our earth, prior to the Event, had only two (comparatively) weak origins: Natural and Technology. You could almost say that there was a "Level Cap" of 20 and not a lot of power sets.

The event blasted out all five origins to "respectable" levels, it's just going to take a while for some of them to kick in. In order: Natural - as high-level martial artists and athletes discover MUCH more useful ki techniques, Magic and Mutation - About the same time as each other, as folks work their way through spell books and puberty to get to stuff that WORKS. And then Science and Technology, as folks try to reverse engineer some supers gear, etc etc.

Specifics:

Mutation -- Will kick in on a small number of kids undergoing puberty after the event, as what is "junk introns" in RL genetics are marker for "YAY POWERS!" under the Mutation origin. And of course on every subsequent generation, newborns, etc.

Magic -- the biggest reason this takes so long is trying to separate the wheat from the chaff of bad mysticism. Also, there's a strong amount of the missing "sixth origin" (divine/Incarnate) clouding the issue for "bookstore mystics."

Oh, like Alistair, maybe?

Actually, I hadn't been thinking along those lines, but in an installment or two Raye is going to make friends with the fictional counterpart of the teenaged girl who lives across the street from us... and if Alistair grants powers instead of just awakening them... maybe we'll have a little team of senshi running around the New Brunswick-Somerset area...

So... would Eva be level A or S? I'm curious where we draw the line. At level 50, she's very similar to Thor in some regards (although that was unintentional), and has some of the same powers as Superman... and I seem to recall at least one mish with folks here where people got a look at the damage she was doing in combat and plotzed. Does that qualify her for S?

I'd personally say that the Virtues and Vices who were... call it 35 and under are in the A category while those above it are S. I'm suggesting this
because of an old writeup I recall about Positron explaining what the level ranges meant. 1-10 was the initial "character has origin and experiments"
levels. 11-20 was "Character develops powers and grows into a hero/villain career." 21-30 was the low level hero career, where you're dealing
with street crime, the occasional "kingpin" of crime and so on. 30-40 was the high level hero career where you were dealing with supervillains, and
plots involving cities and threats to the lives of millions. 41-50 was Avengers level, where you're dealing with threats to the whole planet.

Using that kind of rating system, anyone in the 36+ range would be Avengers material. Anyone under it would be operating on a much smaller scale.

RE: Virtue is its Own Reward 2.0 Discussion Thread
Okay, related to my latest post in the story thread:

Yes, I do have a wooden broadsword. I got it at the Celtic Classic festival in Allentown, PA a few years ago. When I get home tonight, I'll try to find the time to dig it out and take a pic of it to post here.

No, we don't talk to our neighbors at all. We're not antisocial, we're just preoccupied, worn out, gone, or or some combination.

No, the 16-year-old girl across the street is not named "Dani Spicoli". Like my fictional counterpart, I don't remember her first name (her mother told us once, 9 years ago), but while the last name is Italian-sounding, it's not "Spicoli". They do have a German Shepherd, recently acquired, but I don't know the dog's name either. I don't know where I got "Geezer" from, don't ask me.

ETA:  Here's the sword.

Very nicely done Bob, I can just picture the girl trying to look at Alistair and I'd guess Raye and yoruself -would- have some concerns over that eh *grin*
NOw..How badly are you going to regret takeing Raye to a mall lol..or should say how badly will your bank account react *grin*.

And on a kinda related note, I think I'll need to have everyone's beloved lost tanker Blunder into someones's town for a Cameo soon *chuckle*

Well, you certainly could do well wandering by me/Rina. It's not that far of a walk from up there in Canada to the North East US... I forget the actual area, but I think its around Maryland/Delaware/Jersey area.

Well, if you, as the writer, don't know where he is, he must be in the Dakotas. Or possibly Nebraska:

Quote: English Bob (Richard Harris): Well, actually, what I heard was that you fell off your horse, drunk of course, and that you broke your bloody neck.

Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman): I heard that one myself, Bob. Hell, I even thought I was dead 'til I found out it was just that I was in Nebraska.

Okay, following up on the idea that came up in message 187 above, yeah, I'm leading up to a team of local (mostly) senshi. Dani will be the first.

The thing is... I didn't create Evangelia to be part of a team. And I didn't really consult or pay close attention to the original inspiration (or its followup), with the result that I can't use its theme structure. So I thought I'd solicit ideas for the rest of the team.

Now, I want the team to have one each of the five basic hero archetypes. Eva's already got scrapper, obviously. So one tank, one defender, etc. I'm looking for good names, color schemes, and power sets; in particular the names ought to have some kind of callback to Evangelion in them without being incomprehensible or too in-jokey.

Mind you, I'm going to be brainstorming this, too, but I'd be stupid not to draw upon the forum hivemind for extra processing power.

Thanks in advance!

Actualy..what Ankh said reminds me. I don't suppose we can compile of list of locations of where everyones at?

Okay. Rough Timeline of locations I have plotted for "L-Misty"

"EVENT" through Wednesday, July 8 -- Near the Vermont-New Hampshire border, with a trip to VIIOR!Ouroboros on Tuesday, July 7, occasionally stopping
from time to time, making this a terrible knot of causality. Meets "Mender Shiyoko"

Thursday, July 9 -- "The Game Castle" Londonderry, NH.

Friday, July 10 -- Back home, meeting family obligations, setting up for usage of Vacation time from work.

July 17-19 -- Otakon 2009, Baltimore, Maryland. Inner Harbor Neighborhood. L-Misty is supposed to meet the other redside Kunoichi here.

The Otakon Meet is coded through the Hanagawa/Hanover drops that L-Misty set up on July 6.

For Kara, only events I have are:

Event through Sunday: West end Ottawa, plus relatives. Call it half an hour outside Ottawa, past the local marina. Sunday is the big hero day, which is the
next writeup. I'm borrowing somewhat from Caidin for the setup.

That aside, I'm not sure what there'd be (aside from fundamentalist whack jobs at the museum of nature smashing replica dinosaur bones) for heroes to
do. It's pretty much the quietest nation's capital in the world. So action would have to be farther out, I'm thinking.
