Invasion Y2K!
10-30-2012, 08:57 PM
Greetings,
I am in need of a list of twenty-two cities, worldwide, that have IST embassies to serve as the focal points of an alien invasion that corresponds with Y2K in the timeline I am working on.
My timeline is using a modified version of the classic IST timeline, Bob's additional material, stuff from GURPS Timeline, GURPS Aliens and GURPS Atomic Horror as well as a few smatterings from Ken Hite's Transmission 200 timeline.
I already have IST New York at the top of the list.
Thanks,
-Mike

Every UN member nation has one team in its capitol city. You should be able to fill the list just from those, easily.

I've not read the source book, but it would make sense to me that, in addition to a team in each capital city, that there are IST offices in major cities in most nations that aren't capitals. Whether these are any more than a small staff and hero or two would depend on things like populace, international impact, and history. So you might have an IST office in Dallas, renting space in the Downtown area (or perhaps in the more centrally located business park area of Las Colinas, so that one office could cover Dallas and Ft. Worth), but it might be like the consulates that keep offices in Dallas, a small presence.

Okay, here're more precise details: p. IST14, sidebar Team Assignments Wrote:Every nation which is a member of the U.N. has an IST stationed in its capital. Additionally, large countries will have several teams in other cities: one extra IST embassy is provided for every 45,000,000 people. p. IST15, sidebar IST Placements Wrote:The following are nations with more than one IST, and the city or cities they are found in. Capitol cities are included here, and are listed first. The GM should feel free to change this list as he sees fit.
Bangladesh: Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulnea.
Brazil: Brasilia, Fortaleza, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador.
People's Republic of China: China at one time had 10 teams emplaced, with plans for 14 more, but all ISTs were expelled in the aftermath of Tiananmen Square.
Egypt: Cairo, Aswan.
France: Paris, Marseille.
Germany: Bonn, Berlin.
India: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras. There are plans for 15 more ISTs in India.
Indonesia: Jakarta, Banjarmasin, Medan, Ujung Pandang, with one more to be completed in 1991.
Iran: Teheran, Shiraz.
Italy: Rome, Milan.
Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo.
Mexico: Mexico City, Monterey, with one more being built in Mazatlan.
Pakistan: Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta.
Philippines: Manila, Davao.
Thailand: Bangkok, Ranong.
Turkey: Ankara, Malatya.
USSR: Moscow, Irkutsk, Leningrad, Murmansk, Odessa, Sverdlovsk, Yakutsk.
United Kingdom: London, Edinburgh.
United States of America: Washington, DC, Anchorage, Dallas, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York.
Vietnam: Hanoi, Thanh-Pho Ho Chim Minh. Obviously some of this information reflects geopolitical conditions circa 1990 that no longer exist; feel free to edit accordingly.

The thing to remember about Brazil is that it has two capitals; how come there isn't an embassy in São Paulo?

Probably because I didn't know that. But remember, "The GM should feel free to change this list as he sees fit."

Some embassies are more powerful than others, though.
I don't know whether you've ever seen a copy of IST Kingston - it wasn't published by SJGames and it's difficult to find at a reasonable price - but that supplement made it pretty clear that Jamaica's embassy is primarily a rest-and-recuperation facility for recuperating IST metahumans. It's still a fortress, and it still has a core of competent metahumans in residence, but it's not as likely to be able to drive off an alien invasion as, say, IST New York.
Oh, and I'd expect IST Vienna to be more-heavily staffed with spies and counter-spies, and less-heavily staffed with combat monsters. Because, hey - it's Vienna, with all the cultural Cold-War baggage that implies...

Yeah, I don't want to hit ALL of the embassies, the reinforcements to help repel the aliens have to come from somewhere.
I LOVE IST Kingston, it made me think of the old Justice League Blue Beetle-Booster Gold embassy. Took me forever to find a copy, but is the gold standard for me for doing an embassy splatbook. I'm going to borrow the format for some of the stuff I'm planning to do.
The aliens targeted based on a few things:
1. Major cities in UN Security Council (permanent and major rotational member) nations
2. IST presence
3. Large population centers
4. High tech Research Facilities (specifically a couple of locations involved in research of a parachronic phenomenon called Beanstalks - no relation to the one being built ion Kilimanjaro, and a few sites housing EBE technology)
5. Sites where the aliens appeared to be intending to build facilities.
I may up the number to twenty-six,
-Mike

*blinks* Why Dallas when San Antonio is the city with all the military facilities? Kelly AFB, Lackland AFB, Brooks AFB, Fort Sam Houston, Camp Bullis... probably well over 200 sq. miles of military land. Granted, IRL some of these facilities have been shut down or repurposed, but in IST world... I can easily imagine Kelly having been leased to the UN for use of a super team instead of being converted to commercial real estate.

BA, at this late date I have no idea why I chose any of those cities. I think it might have been purely on the basis of geographical distribution, but that still doesn't address your question, as San Antonio is as good as Dallas for the distribution. We can probably chalk it up to some measure of ignorance on my part -- that's always a safe assumption.

Two alternate possibilities, if one wishes to believe Bob is infallible :
The one that makes sense in-universe: Since San Antonio has a huge military presence, the UN setting up what amounts to a competing military presence in their midst could be seen as an aggressive action.
The silly one: Consider what was on TV at the time - the Ewings didn't live in San Antonio. Dallas already has "brand awareness."

I am amused by the idea that the aliens set up their attack plans based on intercepted television broadcasts.

Dallas is a major financial center in U.S. Lots of money and business run through the city. Generally, when it comes to finance, media, banking, and general business, it goes from NYC to LA (or vice versa) and then Dallas. Major federal and international government buildings are also in Dallas, instead of Austin, including more than a dozen consulates and embassies. (Austin has TWO, according to the Internet.) The southern end of the I-35 corridor (which includes Fort Hood in Temple/Killeen and all the other facilities that BA mentions) may have the military facilities, but the power is in Dallas.

Current Target List
Notes: The aliens invaded in three waves, each wave BOTH reinforced one of the initial sites (depending on local resistance) or opened up a new front in anew location. Depending on local expected resistance the attacks began with what came to be known as Kaiju, followed by shock troops and finally by occupation forces.
Target Nations: 1st Wave ( United States - New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Roswell, People's Republic of China - Beijing, Shanghai, Guanzhou, Shenzhen, Russian Federation - Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Zhitkur, French Republic - Paris, United Kingdom - London, Switzerland - Geneva, Republic of India - New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, State of Japan - Tokyo, Federal Republic of Germany - Berlin, Federative Republic of Brazil - Brasilia, Sao Paolo, Italy - Rome, Austria - Vienna, Kenya - Nairobi, Mexico - Mexico City.)
Thoughts?

Right, I'll get IST LA and IST NY ready.
If it happens post 12/21/12, Pink won't be around to save them. In my own IST world, a group of megavillains decide to try to destroy the Earth (hey, why not, it's been advertised, everyone knew it was coming, right?) and leads to The Battle of Three Pinks (resulting in all three of them vanishing utterly).

Hah. I like Pink, she's one of my favorite non-Canon OC's. Did you ever do a GURPS 4e write-up of her?
The invasion happens the on January 1, 2000 simultaneously in 26 sites the world over. I think that predates Pink by a little while if I recall the backstory you posted here and elsewhere...

Um . . . somewhere . . .. After blowing out two hard drives, and MonkeyFist being in the hospital with heart problems over the past few months, I'm not sure I know where I left my head from day to day. (Spoiler, it's usually where I left it.) I'll see if I can find the latest version of her for GCA that I did and do an export. She's obscenely expensive. But, being a Superman/girl Expy, she should be.

That would be great. I hope things get brighter/easier/more carefree for you soon.
All the best characters are, I have a Superman analogue coming down the pike named Achilles; he's the UN's "Dirty Little Secret" from the Cold War who emerges in the late stages of the attack to help the resistance that drives out the aliens.

Well . . . I have a copy of Pink . . . but it's about two-years old. It doesn't reflect the modifications made since Power-Ups 4 came out. And, every time I try to modify the file, GCA craps out on me (sending crash-list to Armin, later).
Grr, I hate having to rebuild Pink--she's got a lot of stuff.
Pink was, orginally, created to be an experiment in "how would these powers affect an otherwise 'normal,' good-natured girl?" in a different supers game.
For IST the answer was fairly easy: She'd present herself to the UN for traning. This is where the experiment changed into "How does the UN handle having an unstoppable bundle of super-powers who is suffering emotional distress from being a teenager?" It was also the "Let the party think that they've got the ultimate artillery piece they can call in if things get too bad." (Many people disagree with that philosphy, but mine was 3-fold: 1. All but one of the players was new to GURPS and IST. 2. It encouraged them to try strange things and, generally, act like super heroes. 3. Pink will be vanishing at a set point in the future.)
But, yeah. Pink/Stephanie would have been two-to-three at the time of the invasion. So long as they didn't attack her, she wouldn't have manifested. Which would have been awkward.

Yeah, ancient, vast, cool and unsympathetic alien overminds really dislike having toddlers eat their lunch.
The thing with ultimate artillery pieces in the form of teenagers is, well, they're teenagers. Just the idea of super as teen pop star celebrity entertains me on so many levels. What do powers, teenage angst and celebrity do to an otherwise normal, good-natured girl. I seem to recall she also has a rather oberbearing mother if I remember correctly, yes? Great combination.
I sympathize with GCA crashing; it mostly tolerates Win 7 and REALLY dislikes Win 8. I would kill for a stable Win 7 version.

Funny part of that is, when a Pink manifests, they always look like she does. It doesn't matter how old they were, or their physical condition--they become that person. So . . . a three-year-old in . . .. (Okay, I am the SJGames Forum Pervert, but even I won't go there.) I keep threatening MonkeyFist with a geriatric version who manifests in her eighties . . . and becomes a super-powered, immortal teen. Can you hear the “halleluiahs” yet?
Her mother (Susan) knows she'd be a bad influence on Stephanie (she works out of Amsterdam and Budapest--guess what she does for a living). She is, actually, the opposite of overbearing (though “Dominatrix” has been in her job description at times). She does her best to stay out of Stephanie's life. Not that she doesn't love her, but, she wants what's best for Stephanie, and knows it isn't her. So, now, Stephanie is being raised, basically, by Argurous. Now she has an "overbearing" mother-figure. Technically, two of them, as she deals, a lot, with Witchwind as well.
I don't, usually, have that much trouble with GCA, except for older files. I just put it on my new Win8 laptop and it doesn't like the touch-screen. Which is super-annoying. Oh well, that's what the keyboard and touchpad are for.
