Well, in the Japanese production version, I hear that Asuka's German accent is wretched, as well.

Asuka's accent wasn't wretched. It was somewhere between bad and terrible, and the words made no sense, even for bad technobable.
Although I must say as a general rule Anime in general tends to have better German than English. Probably less experience with mangeling it.
