Personally, the appeal for me boils down to seeing life from the other side of the fence. Being female is not weak (a point I think we can agree on), but it is most definitely Different. Different on a level that most people never have to confront. It's not about coming out of the experience as 'more manly men' but 'better people in general' who are able to deal with life. Being able to empathize more effectively with half of the population (that I sometimes just don't understand) is part of this.
I recognize that some of my ideas are a little skewed (and this may be one of them) but being gender-swapped forces one to address life from a different viewpoint (how large or small this difference is depends on the person). And that kind of perspective shifting is a good thing. It shakes up assumptions that we didn't know we had, and it forces us to grow as people.
Then again, this my just be twisted take on the topic.
