I'll agree in the specific case of Xander, but disagree in general. Its possible to create tension without the threat of death. In fact, in
the Buffyverse a "fate worse than death" is quite possible.

I mean, by your logic Angel couldn't have dramatic tension because he can be disembolwed but stand up again later.
