What I meant by subtle was that he keeps himself vague enough to not commit to false data and assumptions, yet is actually leading her to the thought process he wants her to have. Its the old adage, 'you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. thing. Telling Rei that rocks fall everyone dies, will not change things. Subtle prods that, in the end, Gendo is in danger and not explaining why, with the 'I think I know what is going on approach' is going to be more effective. Though at some point he is going to have to steer Rei towards situations where things are going to trainwreck catastrophically to give her reference points. I'm sure you can have Rei watch school romantic relationships trainwreck due to crazy trolll logic a time or three and have her set the TV to soaps, rather than the variety shows she apparently has been leaving on.
Bringing that point up, about Rei having horrid TV viewing habits by accident, may be a big part of what keeps her with one foot in Uncanny Valley. She keeps trying to under stand people and picks things that are incomprehensible to most of them for the sampling... and she hasn't had a sounding board to tell her that these are big examples of things that don't make sense on purpose. Whether this is why Gendo lets her watch TV at all or if she just picked up his horrid tastes by accident coul be a back story thing. I'm not even sure if this was mean as a plot point or not... but I can see Gendo manipulating her schedual to kill her points of reference with sociey's random, inexplicable kibble. Even having Rei turn the TV on in the background and it keep on the shows that drive Isaiah nuts enough to comment... having a second independent source echo his concerns would be good for the kind of thing that changes things without Isaiah having a clue why.

Gendo tends to hire the social outcasts so he can manipulate them and its one of the qualities that fuels the scenario... like gasoline on a candle.
