Sort of answer to one: The gimmick is novel and interesting.  The execution is fine.  
Answer to two:  Writing is improved by reading and writing.  Make or keep both a habit.
Being anxious about failure is better than being so certain of success that it impairs the work.  
The whole writing out lists and not disposing of them bugs me from an opsec perspective, but that can be a plothook.
Overall:  I am happy I read it.  I feel it was worth my time.  I would be interested in reading more.
