One of the more cynical but vaguely plausible explanations I've seen for Buffy's constantly worse decisions was syphillus eating her brain, caught from one of the centuries old bedmates... of course, it's more the fault of the series law that Murphy was a rosy-eyed optimist and if nothing is wrong you're missing something.
