Thanks to the "IWIW RWBY" thread recommended elsewhere, I discovered this fic: Emergence by Chris7221. The girls of Team RWBY start arriving in the Real World... not together, and not all at once. Can Ruby, with the help of a bunch of poor college students, find her teammates and gather them all together?
Better than it sounds, and the first installment in a series of fics. I've not gotten through all of them yet, but based on the few I have read, I'll recommend them all, even sight unseen.
Edit: And now, a few days later, I've finished just about everything in the series, including the April Fools stories. I reinforce my recommendation. Also, a bit of an explanation -- this is not in Completed Fanfic Recommendations because the various stories are very tightly bound together, and the current one is still being written (in fact, the most recent installment just came out yesterday). For those interested, after Emergence there is Aliens Among Us, followed by the still-incomplete Convergence; these three stories while functionally stand-alone, make up the main story arc that everything else ties into. And which is going some very interesting places right now.

...and my shoes began to squeak.
