I'll admit, the story starts a bit roughly. It's one of those 'wrong boy who lived' stories, except it's start is very stereotypical of the genre as it seems that Harry is mistreated for the sake of mistreated so that he's got justification to be something of an arse. But... it doesn't stay that way for too long. I haven't gone through the whole story yet as it's a whopping 400k words (I'm about half way through). But it starts to slowly become apparent that there's a lot of different external forces at work and everyone has a legitimate motivation for doing what they're doing beyond self absorption and ego (though there's a lot of that involved as well).
TLDR: It starts out roughly but it's a very entertaining ride as it continues on.
