So, reading Heretical Edge sent me off to another Wordpress blog, The Gods are Bastards, and I wanted to recommend it. Set in a fantasy world that has reached its Industrial Age, the story follows a group of students attending a legendary university, run by the infamous elven archmage, Arachne Tellwyrn. Not a Steampunk setting, but actual industrialized magic, similar to the Eberron setting for D&D. The setting contains elements of the Wild West, along with a number of standard fantasy tropes, which proceeds to investigate and both subvert and reinforce. (One of the students is a paladin, for example.) Plenty of humor, action, and just a little bit of horror. And a strange twist that's revealed around Chapter 11. Well, maybe not strange, per se, as I've seen the trope in previous stories, but it's a good version of the trope, and it's an equally good answer for a number of the whys and wherefores of the cosmology of the setting. Anyway, Eb-Bob sez, "Check it out."
