I suspect the author wrote himself into a corner - the way the Golem's situation had been built up, there was really no chance for a happy ending. Dumbles
was going to have him killed off eventually, the Ministry wanted him in a lab, and his only support was a couple (albeit intelligent and determined)
schoolkids.
I also suspect that based on that, and BajaB's previous writings, he actually saw this as a happy ending - a blazer (or boom) of glory, as it were.
