I just realized this this morning -- isn't the robot with the fire
extinguisher the one that he's shown with in the archive photo, the one
he built as
a teenager?

  Actually, it was a re-painted Fanuc -- I've used them, in my opinion KUKAs are better (though since I work for KUKA, I may be biased).

And yeah, the dialogue was, as far as I am concerned, perfect. Not a false note rang to my ears

I agree.  They managed to have non-stop funny and serious all interleaving together.
There was one plot point that seemed kind of weak to me, but I think I've figured it out after some thought.
