It's because a lot of those programs were compiled with illegal copies of the official Xbox development kit. It'd be risky for a website to have them
up, but IRC seems to generally be overlooked.
Personally, I'm not sure I like this mod installer arrangement. I prefer something I can install manually so I know exactly what's going on, and that
won't brick the console if it gets messed up... (The "double dash" exploit looks promising, at least the way it's described in the thread for
it. The package that's downloadable from the website seems to be a bit more of a pain.)
(Whatever you do, it's a very good idea to have some kind of savefile that will boot something with a ftp server. All kinds of things that you can fix with
that, as long as the system hasn't been unplugged and you can still boot up games...)
