One last follow-up. After more testing and troubleshooting, it appears that the cable modem's ethernet connection was fried, possibly the ethernet cable as
well. If I had to place a bet, I'd say that the lightning strike hit really close to the CAT-5 cable running into the house. Time Warner says they can see
the modem. But it can't make network connection with a standard ethernet. It can make a connection with a USB cable. But that's not really good enough
for my needs. So I'm going to get the modem replaced and run a new ethernet cable. Also set up my old router too so there will be one more device between
the computer and the input from outside.
Bottom line - It appears that I was really REALLY lucky that my old PC didn't have anything else fried as
well, like - oh - my drives. I was able to move all my data over to the new PC, no problem. And the old PC still works just fine aside from the ethernet
connectivity.
But man, that was WAY too close. I'm going to look into getting a UPS for my systems. I don't want this happening again.
