I was just reminded of a classic from the nearly pre-internet age:
On April 1, 1985, in the pages of Sports Illustrated magazine, George Plimpton brought to our attention The Curious Case of Sidd Finch.

ETA this - if you click the View This Issue link, you can go to that article and see the photos and diagrams and such that went with it.
and this - in the April 8 issue, the Scorecard section had a piece called The End of the Affair, in which Sidd Finch quit baseball because his control had left him.  The April 15 issue included a Letter from the Publisher, in which they wrote that they hadn't expected things to get so out of hand.
