You know... one thing that surprises me so far about my interviews is that I haven't run into any gamers who recognize my name, or at least GURPS, among the tech types I've spoken with. I would have expected more gamers among their numbers.
A lot of people get into IT...or I suppose it'd be called ICT nowdays, whatever...simply because, y'know, it's a good white collar job.
Perhaps at one point, folks were defined by their vocation...but if that was ever true, I don't think it's now the case. Probably hasn't been for many years. For a lot of people, a job's just what you do to make money. It may not say anything, at all, about your interests or character.
EDIT: I just realised there's some degree of absolute irony...in the fact that I'm making this post as I'm pressing my good suit for a college-run networking event in an hour, but I know at least one group that'll be there is relevant to my interests. >_>
EDIT 2: That said, Mr. Schroeck, I wonder - maybe the fact you're a published author for game materials counts in your favour? Even if the folks you're interviewing with don't recognize GURPS, it probably sets you apart from most people who are interviewing. In a good way.
