You didn't mention the browser your using, but Firefox with no scripts and Java turned off seems to help. That does cripple the main website, but sometimes it's the only way to go to the web site.
I usually allow most of fanfiction.net's ads to run unless they go far overboard like the latest round, after all those ads are what pays for the handling of the fanfics.
I've actually seen worse "attack ads at so called reputable websites like news websites.
Ads that literally take the web page hostage.
Ads that slide around staying in the exact center, corner, top or bottom of the page.
I've also seen ads that flare up and expand their boundaries or dash across the webpage at random intervals
Time delayed adds that suddenly explode filling more than half the screen after you've had several seconds to start reading.
I don't believe I've ever seen fanfiction.net host those type of ads, I guess free fanfiction isn't worth the programming effort.
