Yep Sata is 1 to 1. My motherboard doesn't even have any pata connectors.
The Optical drive isn't non-functional in terms of reading that disc - it's non function in terms of doesn't open when you use the eject button. The little light on the front comes on, though, which seems to indicate that it does have power. It's also detected by my bios - which does indicate that it isn't a loose cable.
IIRC, this is the part of the computer which turned up first - and the package got shoved through my letter box and fell to the floot with the outer wrapping half off. It may have got damaged in transit.
