Hm. I've tried this a few times now, and my latest effort has been the only real success to date -- two liquid stages (cylinder tank with 5-engine cluster for stage 1, sphere tank with single engine for stage two) and the capsule, plus some fins and the necessary couplers and whatnot. I launched it four hours and ten minutes ago, hit a maximum velocity of about 2.5 km/sec... and apparently made escape velocity, because the flight is still going and literally just turned over 30000km "altitude" a moment ago when I looked to see how far they'd gotten. They've slowed down some, to "only" 1.9 km/sec, but I suspect they're not going to get pulled back to "earth" any time soon. I also noted that by moving the camera, the capsule is pointed more-or-less at their sun... I wonder what will happen if I leave it running long enough.
ETA: Apparently the program locks up and the window goes blank, somewhere past six hours and 40000 km...

Then the horns kicked in...
...and my shoes began to squeak.
