Losing my dwarf kitty Gunstar wasn't so bad, but then she'd always had a heart murmur and apparently just never woke up after curling up in a sunny spot. Thus far, the yorkie dog (at the bottom of the siz range for the breed at 4 lbs, which is actually just a bit bigger than Gunstar now that I think about it - though Bits doesn't perch on my shoulder, nor has she been in a rolling fight with a small pack feral dogs like the one that got Gunstar renamed from Miss Ghostie) who is my current animal companion is doing well enough, but she's only eight and so is only middle aged for a Yorkshire. The only other animal whose death I really remember was Stewit Duly, a Polish Hen cockerel who kept flying up and attacking me with his beak and leg spurs when I was a kid, and had to be literally batted out of the air with a stick when I'd go into the coop to feed them, so that was more of a celebration really.

ETA: Just because pets are the topic, I would like to note that my ittle four pound dog trotting across the floor shakes the whole house. Thus preserving the trend of animals with a disproportionate potential for destruction... somehow. I think oit might be a case of her trot happening to match the resonant frequency of the structure, but whatever it is is rattles the dishes and makes liquids and lamp pullcords wobble.
