Eliminating backward compatibility in ebook reader files is sure fire way of really pissing of your customers. Also the lack of any error messages to clue in the user as to why the file won't open is annoying to say the least. For the matter if Amazon is abandoning .mobi why is it that the kindle reader is still associated with the .mobi extension?
However from the comments I've gotten in the thread I started on amazons kindle forum are interesting. Amazon has been making changes in the kindle file format and the kindle reader. Mainly with KF8 which seems to be the current version any .mobi or .azw ebooks created or converted with formats prior to KF8 will not open.
