Not sure, myself. But you definitely want "From Ashes." There's really no question that those missions are necessary to get the most out of the game. Plus, Prothean beam-spam rifle. 'Nuff said...
If you decide you like it, I'd recommend the other mission DLC. Citadel gives you an apartment, and adds a lot of relationship work between LI's, which is nice. Omega is another blast through the Omega space station, this time blowing away Cerberus occupying forces in order to reclaim the fortress for Aria. And Leviathan deals with a renegade Reaper and fills in a lot more backstory.
I've just finished playing ME1 through with a new character, and I'm starting ME2 now. I figure I'll have that character ready in a month or so for ME3. So by then, I'll have had a chance to see if the MEHEM mod has been tweaked at all for the Citadel DLC, or if it wasn't necessary (current scuttlebutt says it doesn't change any of the endgame flags.) So that should be good.
It's odd that the fan-mod is necessary to deliver on the promise this game had, considering how much promise it had going into the third game. But at this point, I'm just glad someone made it.
