In the reboot of the Justice League of America comic after the Crisis on the infinite Earths (Let me date myself by saying that I stopped collecting comics before any later Crisis storyline), at the end of their first story arc, the group is discussing what they'll call themselves. Now all these years later I forget who said what, but someone suggests "The Avengers". And someone else says, "No, no, we'll get confused with those other guys." "What other guys?" "You know, John Steed and Emma Peel."
Incidentally, isn't Captain America supposed to be one of the few who is worthy to lift the hammer? I distinctly recall one comic issue from twenty years or so back when he and Thor were set upon by overwhelming numbers, Thor was separated from Mjolnir, and Cap picked it up, swung it just enough to clear away a bunch of his attackers, and then tossed it back to Thor. "Hammer express coming your way!" or something like that. If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, Thor had been having doubts about Cap for a little while before that incident -- it was in one of those periods when he'd given up the title Captain America -- and his being able to lift Mjolnir dispelled them.
