The new series, Mars Chronical, may not be everyone's cup either, because it goes back and tells about Alita and Erica's childhood together.  The tradeoff is that we even eventually learn the terrible truth of Yoko's origins and exactly why Erica turned into a sociopath.

Absurd notions abound that somehow Nazis made it to Mars very soon after the war and colonized the place long before anyone else could.  And without anyone to interfere with them, they developed advanced technology before they had their own society collapse sometime before the first colonists of the post-apocalypse Earth made it there.

But then, we all knew that Yukito Kishiro had a strange imagination.  :V
