A few of those quotes from military performance reviews sounded much like reviews submitted by U.S. Army officer Lewis Cass (later Secretary of War) in the first half of the 19th century. A 20th-century guide for Army officers cited some gems; one of them was [approximate quote]: "Unsuited for anything upon this earth. Heaven knows how the poor thing ever got an appointment." ["Appointment" here meaning commission as an officer.] Cass rated another officer as “a knave despised by all.”
