A "reach-ahead class" is a class in next year's syllabus, instead of last year's syllabus - Chiyo-chan is getting ahead of her course load instead of needing to take a re-do class. If it's called something else in California, feel free to change it.
What possessed the two electrokinetics to attend the party dressed as each other? I think I've mentioned the reason in a post here, but not in the story: They're making it less awkward if somebody else shows up dressed as someone who's already at the party. "It's okay; we did the same thing." And, hey, look at what Fate's wearing.
