Americans have been mistaking the founding principles of their own nation for Communism since at least the 1970s, according to studies which have had people read uncredited passages from the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and then asked them for their opinions on the politics of the writers.

Decades further back: Frank Hague, mayor of Jersey City for thirty years (1917-1947), is quoted as saying in '38,

We hear about constitutional rights, free speech and the free press. Every time I hear these words I say to myself, "That man is a Red, that man is a Communist." You never hear a real American talk like that.
